Memorial Day 2021
Armed Forces Day is for those in uniform. Veterans Day is for those who hung up their uniform. Memorial Day is for those who died wearing their uniform. Not all were KIA, but dead is dead.
James Reid. Died 6/29/43 at age 18 when a mortar round in his back pack exploded while boarding the USS Dickman for the invasion of Sicily.

Amazing the luck, or lack there of, that goes into making it through a war.
A couple of vets we’re friends with are always irritated by how people don’t know the difference between veteran’s and Memorial Day. I don’t blame them.

Thinking about two men I knew who served their country, came home,
Then took their own lives because they couldn’t live with what they saw and did, and our government did little to help them

I encourage you to read it.
Their cases are not unique. More than 20 vets per day kill themselves.
We need to do better.

Doubt anyone in my neck of the woods will be playing Taps at 3pm local time so in a fit of respect to our fallen I downloaded taps from Amazon and will blast it from my laptop speakers. Should carry pretty well out here.

Not I. Just the sound of the neighbor mowing around his flag. But I'm sure that it is being played.

I heard it played live at my brother-in-law’s funeral. He was a retired Navy Seal, who died from cancer. The local VFW sent over a crew to play taps and give a salute with their rifles (presumably shooting blanks). I didn’t count how many shots there were - maybe 21, but don’t know for sure.
My Dad was a Navy pilot in WWII. He was also a Scottish Rite Mason, so he got bagpipes instead of taps - and a very complicated ritual involving marching around and waving swords.

This hit hard:
This Memorial Day, I shed some tears. For my relatives lost in wars past, for friends lost in my generation's wars, and for all of the men who I brought home like this. It was an honor.
Some of my own pics from back in the day. I did this far too many times to count...
Poured some out for the homies this year...
