Stock up on bikes and parts, then sell it all in 2020/21.

I really wish I hadn't sold a couple of the really awesome bikes I had back in the 90's. Modern bikes ride way better but they're not nearly as cool.

Also, I should've learned how to do a couple more cool tricks while I was still young and my body could still recover from crashes in a timely manner.

Learn drops when young.... agreed on the stockpile of parts and bikes pre-covid. Would be so rich right now

Just because a bike part looks cool / is expensive doesn’t mean it’s good.

Yeah, mine's red... And in the old days, many trips over the bars. Back then, rake angle was much steeper, more along the lines of road bikes. Today's bikes, yes, centered and balanced.

What do you wish you could tell yourself when you first started mt biking

Ride everyday, cause that golden age of mtn biking had a shelf life, and I didn’t know it was gonna go away. Trails the size of tire tracks with no one on them, pogo stick suspensions and bar ends, Lycra shorts, inventing the progression of the sport every time we rode something.

    It’s was indeed very special.

    Also: what Toast said.

Also: don’t buy Ritchey clipless pedals.

Also: don’t buy those tires just because they are pale green.

    Also: powerbars are disgusting

Finally: focus more on enjoying the ride and less on being the “best”

Damn, jelly of your color choice.

Haha — yeah prior to 2020 last bike I rode was my hard tail from middle school (circa mid 90’s). Honestly, pretty much any bike these days will monster truck through anything and is stupid capable.

This was essentially the same as my first MB. Note the angles (and ZERO suspension):

My first mt. Bike was a Univega Alpina, 1986 model.
I would tell my young self to save up a bit more, and get the Mountain Cycle/stumpjumper/whatever.

I rode CCM's and Ralieghs off road or where ever as a kid but really they sucked for the job at hand

I rented the 1st real mtn bike 1983 in Banff, I could tell right away it was the shit so I rode it off trail and down some stairs which freaked out my GF at the time

1st real mtn bike was an 86 marin which is still my bar bike, the geometry is slack enough to ride it no-hands to the craft brew, no-hands going home is a little more daunting

I'm impressed at how many people started on univega alipinas. I'm one of those too.
