I am a white, middle class intellectual type who grew up in middle of nowhere. And yet somehow DMX was a fundamental to my adolescence. Angry? DMX was there. Getting ready for a big basketball game and new to borrow some aggression? X got yah. If X Gonna Give It To Yah comes on, I'm still ready to run through a brick wall.

For someone who was likely an objectively bad person, I'm really sad things worked out for him the way that they did.

Lotta truth to this. X did wonders for my undergrad alma mater’s hype videos and timeout breaks during basketball games.

I still call it The Jake.

I'm no DMX historian but it sounds like he had a shit start and battled lifetime mental and substance abuse problems, both of which are topics in his music. Flawed? Definitely. Bad person? Not sure.

Sad news. I had high hopes for him after hearing him on a hip hop radio talk show on XM years ago. He had recently gotten out of prison, was saying how it actually did him a lot of good and he got clean, tried making amends with people he hurt, etc. He sounded so grounded and well put together after a lifetime of repeatedly messing up and doing hard time. I like to believe people deserve second chances so it's always tough to see when people can't slay their demons. RIP, X.

Anyone else catch the funeral live stream yesterday? It was something to behold.

Dmx body arrived at the Barclays center in a monster truck. After a 2 hour procession from Yonkers with 2000+ Motorcycles behind.

Kanye produced the service with his gospel singing people... some good singers... pretty awesome. Swizz beats was mad and called people out for being fake friends.

Say what you want about his music.... like it or not... the dude put up numbers for album sales that will likely never be duplicated by anyone ever. Even if The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and the funk brothers put out a collab album.

Dude was a legend in his own time.

I'm a DMX fan, but a little confused by this statement. Looked at his wiki for album sales and this doesn't seem to be the case. Is it another metric I'm missing?

Anyway, cool to hear about the funeral, that gave me a chuckle.

I was 12 or 13 when DMX came on the scene and blew up. I had his first couple albums on cassette. It's funny how you can not hear a song for 20 years, and then immediately know all the words but still not remember where you put your keys...

Anyway, RIP dog. I guess he gave it to us, and then DMXpired...

He was the only rapper to have 3 number 1 albums in the same year. Pretty crazy.
