And of course, unpacking the luggage to sleep in the cabin, not the van.

Should we add "parked at a hotel so they don't have to sleep in the van" to the list?

Seems like this thread is confusing Vanlife for Overlanding. While I’ll never admit to Overlanding, I’ve been wheelin and camping for many years. It is a great way to get out, see some nice scenery, and camp in a remote location away from all the #Vanlifers.

We're always confusing stuff with other stuff at Teton Depravity Research. It's never stopped us before. By the 23rd page you won't even know what the original topic was.

Overlanding and vanlifing are fancy ways to say car camping and RV'ing. Some people need to dress things up to impress their fellow class members.

I may try to corner the market on overhydro'ing and am open to recs. There has to be a way to make boating sound cooler.

At what point does overlanding become upstating?

You're not wrong. I used to say: I just slept in my car. But people gave me the cross glance normally reserved for a homeless methhead. Now I say: I'm car camping; people want to hug me for my conservation efforts and for protecting the environment.

As though homeless crack addicts have a huge environmental footprint.
It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

Couldn't be bothered to read this thread. But you know, people drive around all year long with winter tires on. Just let that soak into your noodles.

I feel like there's got to be a pretty significant overlap between the GOTOS devotees and the "everyday carry" douchebags.

How much? Full disclosure, I've thought Sportsmobiles are kinda cool for a really long time, like forever. I wouldn't mind having one if it didn't have to be a daily driver and you had another vehicle...

Edit to add they also own a Raptor!

Well fuck, I’m clearly at a 6 or 7 on the sprinter. In our defense we use the shit out of it the skid plates and bumper have more than paid for themselves in southern utah. I used the max trax to get out of a hub deep sand pit outside of Zion.

The snorkels aren’t really for fording streams. A buddy has one and they are for keeping the sand out of your air filter, I have had to replace my filter mid trip and John’s looked new.....

If sliders are bad then I don't want to be right. Mine have saved me numerous times.

If they count I'm now a solid mountain town 7. Get excited.

Well shit. The wifes mall crawler has:

    -front bumper with winch
-rear bumper with full size spare, dual jerry can holder, hi-lift, and fold down table
    -270 awning
-roof rack usually with shovel/chainsaw/box of extra fluids/tools
    -light bar and light pods
    -fridge
    -sliders
    -gears/lockers
    -oversize tires/black rims

Better get some Fucking rod vaults and trasharoos to boost some points!

CJ7 scores a 3 for non removable rims, lift, and bumpers.

Bronco scores a 0, but soon to be a 1

Yeah, I have always heard the snorkel is more useful in desert setting. Makes sense. Pulling air from higher up, where the dust isn't as thick.

I think most of us aren't saying that these type of vehicles aren't cool. I personally would love one. I think this is more a bingo of all the accessories that seem to be left affixed to them at all times when they aren't necessary (or from extreme newness, appear never to have been used).

Now obviously you're not switching out your rims to go to the grocery store, but certain details do complete the on brand look for the vehicle type and they seem to be included here.
