Praxis custom run idea (charger), might even be PM Gear related
Not posting much lately, been skiing zero this season, despite new boots and all.
Asked Keith about a year agohow much he wanted for a 40m radius Freeride, and despite the fact that it was only a matter of widening the waist a measly 7mm, it would cost me about 2 big ones. Now, I'm not a stranger to spending idiotic amounts of money on a pair of skis that I won't get to ski that often, mostly given my location, but one can also be reasonable and try to sucker other people into the same idea.
A 40mR Freeride sounds like a blast, and probably is all I really want. Luring others into those dreaded 40s these days is more of a task than I'm up for, so I started thinking about going down to a 35m sidecut radius. That 5 metre reduction would probably be imperceptible to most, myself included, but it's a friendlier number.
For truly shitty snow, I keep Down SD105s in both lengths, and think the 105mm section is pretty covered.
So, what do I want:
-Classic heavier big mountain charger
-Damp more than snappy
-4/5 on the Praxis stiffness scale
-192-194 length (we could name it the 189, as long as it's between 192-194)
-110-115 underfoot
-Longer actual sidecut length (closer to 160cm than 140) than the more usual longish radius skis out there (are there any skis with a >30m radius any longer??),meaning not a lot of taper.
-GPO rocker/camber profile, or something very much like it (as the rocker profile on that ski is really nice to ski)
So, what I ended up with doing was as follows:
Pulled the numbers from three Praxis models - the RX, the GPO and the Freeride (FRD), cooked them together, and ended up with a bastard version of the three.
Tip and tails from the FRD, rocker profile from the GPO, sidecut figures from the GPO/RX adapted to the sidecut length of the FRD (158cm on a 192). The result was 140/116/128, calculated 34m radius for the 192 model. In a 194 that would correlate to an even 35mR. That ski would probably make me plenty happy. Maybe even as a CCR?
Back a few years ago, I was advised to buy the Bro 192, ultimately ended up with the Faction 13,which were stupid fast.
So, what's wrong with the GPO, RX and Freeride?
GPO has an awesome rocker profile, but would have liked it to both have a longer sidecut length AND radius, meaning less tapering, to gain stability. A really fun ski to pivot quickly, but I suspect that's more of a rocker profile win than with the shape of it.
RX: never skied it, but it's just too short for me to consider.
FRD: close to ideal, but too deep a sidecut for me to think strongly about. Never skied it. The 184 might've been a great touring option, but I also hate touring.
So, basically a 194 RX with the FRD tip and GPO profile, would it work? Would anyone else be interested? Would this be so close to the Lhasa tip 192 Bro model that we might as well pressure splat and Keith into making that one, as was done with Lhasa fats and the Kusalas?

So you're thinking when it's done it'll look something like this?
Brandine: Now Cletus, if I catch you with pig lipstick on your collar one more time you ain't gonna be allowed to sleep in the barn no more!
Cletus: Duly noted.

Longer rx should come close to that radius. I wouldnt go ccr, probably knock it down to 2mm camber and that should give it a touch extra rocker and splay. That should add stability and maneuvreablity. I wouldnt mind if the twin tips were more gradual less abrupt though. I think that would fit with other praxis smooth transitions with their rockers, tapers and sidecuts

This exists - it’s called a Supergoat or a pro rider or a Lhasa

That's funny you edited your op to include 192 Bro. My thoughts instantly went there. It's underrated and imho a more versatile ride than the Lhasa

Isn’t it similar to the 191 Lhasa?

That checks out.
That is the model 192 you mean w/ Lhasa tip?

PMGearhead here.
In on both previous Praxis represses.
Sadly no time on the 192 Bro, good info here though:

Pfuffenmeister: obviously, in for a third, then?
Tuco: you do need a backup pair, though.
Skylift: that's a no. Lp105s are great, beefed up versions would be preferable. SGs look awesome, but are heavier on the pintail than I'd like. Lhasas aren't on the market, but would probably work. Heavy pintail, though.
Interesting that more people have clicked on the 40mR FRD than either other option, btw. Makes me happy. To be honest, either idea in the poll would work for me (though option 1 would make me the happiest). A Bro 192 repress would likely have a broader appeal than the rest, thus making it easier to round up whatever number required.Last edited by arild; 04-11-2021 at 08:45 AM.

Thanks, Tuco!
So, at least 7 mags would like a >35m sidecut radius charger.
I know there are more out there, hoping that one day, Dynastar will rerelease the XXL, or that Whitedot gets a collective brain hemorrhage and decide the same with the OG Ragnaroks.
Please just vote. this thread has a shitload of views, any charger interested skier would probably have an opinion on the subject matter. If not, I'm just going to assume that mags have jumped the shark, started believing that 19m really is enough.
