My home town of Weaverville,CA as well as surrounding communities of Hayfork, Douglas City, Junction City and outlying areas are under evacuation warnings due to the Monument fire. This area has been through several fires over the years. Family and friends have lost homes before. Heartbreaking.

Was the shot taken on Sunday Aug 15? Because if so, here is Rainier at 7 am from Mowich Lake. There was a lenticular on top, and one that had broken off. Looks like they floated over to the fire by Bumping Lake and got stuck on the fire's pyrocumulous cloud. Pretty amazing.

People are packing for evac of Susanville. Fire southwest of Tahoe along Hiway 50 has torched a couple small towns. The wind kicked up today and there's concern the Dixie will jump containment lines and actually get to Susanville. One southwest of Tahoe is 0%.

^^^ It’s called the Caldor Fire. Because of the wind fx: S, E, NE, and W over the next few days, the evacuation area is pretty large.

AQI went from 30 to 430 in 3 hours at my house today. Caldor is a rager.

Yeah, huh? Fucking blue sky to brownout in an instant. I could tell something had kicked up when I smelled fresh burn yesterday. I hate post burn soot smell the most.

That it is. Looks like Big Bar is gone, and Burnt Ranch is about to be. Used to drive 299 regularly in the summer for H20ski at Whiskeytown and Shasta. Gorgeous area other than all the fires.
    Vibes mang.

I saw a map a couple of weeks ago showing huge, recent fires scars between the Dixie and Susanville. Looked to me at the time the town would be safe. Guess not…

    Wildfire 2021

Anyone know what is up with the separate fire just south of Janesville? Wondering if that’s a separate incident or a result of Dixie spotting

Edit: Just read around in the link above and it appears he has the same question.

Wife and I were talking recently how a lot of locations east of the Cascades have fallen off our radar due to heat and smoke in the summers.

I mean, it’s always been smoky in the west in the summers, but some of these AQIs have to be like smoking cigarettes in terms of health impacts.

I noticed Kirkwood was over 600 yesterday. I’ve never seen a number that high before anywhere

    Thanks.

Sort of interesting to think about annual average air quality in a location that doesn’t get as much summer smoke versus a place that has poor summer air quality, but might be much much better the rest of the year.

Kirkwood's webcam yesterday was a vision of hell around 4pm. Visibility was pretty much down to 1/4 mile. The lifts weren't visible, only the foreground trees.

They’re now using heavy helicopters on the Caldor fire that apparently, can operate and night, visibility allowing.

    Excellent. It’s terrible over here.
