With the fully vaxed now much freer, the parks and pathways are filling up.
This is Parque Bicentenario near where I live. An oasis in a congested city.
This sign was just outside the park
Sign of the times.....

Cyber day promos are abound (be sure to read the fine print). That 25-40cm dump might encourage some takers, but I am holding out for now.

For history buffs, an interesting perspective on the birth of skiing in Chile, in an article from the DAV (Deutscher Andenverein) or Club Aleman Andino de Chile.
https://www.dav.cl/2020/07/esqui-de-...aleman-andino/
There is also a cool spanish-narrated diaporama on youtube
Epic photos from the 20's on, mostly in the 30's. You will learn why the french term "Randonnée" is so common in Chile, and only those who have ventured to the northern hemisphere routinely use "backcountry".
They are actually different terms, and many in the DAV practice Randonnée (more contemplative) rather than Backcountry (more adrenaline focused).
Enjoy! They evidently did.... WAY more snow back then.

In a word, yuk
Snowfall aside, this rain throughout the south/central zone is now flooding some areas and producing minor landslides.

Been in maritime air therapy for the last 5 days (Papudo, Los Molles). Meantime, the travel restrictions were extended to June 30. Hospital ICU capacity is now 97% full, with under-40's taking up 43%. Almost 90% are unvaccinated, or have only one dose (Sinovac)
"entre un 85% y 90% de pacientes UCI en Chile no tiene vacuna contra covid o sólo una dosis

Looks like a good solid base up high in Maule. Too bad it is either nothing or rain on the radar for now. Must be lots of snow high from there south (above 1,700-1900m).
Warm for this time of year.

Oops, more doom and gloom. The Region Metropolitana gets yet another dose of shock treatment, going into quarantine (fase 1) from this Saturday.
https://www.gob.cl/noticias/covid-19...de-cuarentena/
Even though they say in this communicationLas autoridades del Ministerio de Salud destacaron que durante esta jornada se superaron los 20 millones de dosis administradas de vacunas contra el COVID-19.
The vaccine drive is down to 22 year old's this week, and is shifting focus to the "rezagados" (unable, or isolated, or social media victims) and apparently many who didn´t show up for jab #2.

The next best thing to snow and rock is liquid snow and rock, right? Well, given all the fun stuff you can do on the coast in Chile, maybe.
Some shots of Papudo and Los Molles beach towns and environs from this week. At least we got that last outing in before the door shuts again.
Bonus track, Congrio Colorado!
And dried seaweed (cochayuyo etc)
Great diving can be found in Los Molles, and I saw several dive shops working. From lots of places along the coastal walk to the Puquén (waterspout) you can hear the large sea lion colony barking and what-not, pretty rude stuff sometimes. Lots of seabirds to boot.

While the southern volcanos are not yet visible, the more northern ones are looking better after the recent storms

What we used to take for granted...
Google Photos from opening day in La Parva, June 2014. Worth living just for a day, if it is like this:

So the Altiplano is the place to be for snow this week.
T
Paso Sico near San Pedro de Atacama, a desolate zona de Puna.
The freezing level is finally down in the south.

Getting snow on Volcan Guallatiri (6,100m, active). Too bad it is so far away from anything. Well, except human trafficking of economic refugees to the promised land of Chile.....

Too bad google can´t spell right.
The "Bolivian winter" is normally in the summer, but climate change ya know..

Interesting chart of the vaccination campaign and R, by region. The % are of adult pop, not total. 12 regions (of 16) have R under 1.
The health minister was saying today that this is the first indicator of the effectiveness of the vaccine. Everyone hopes so.
