I know of many parents going through the same thing. How do you tell your girls it's going to be ok? Heartbreaking.

I've got two daughters, 10 and 12 years old. I teared up this morning when they asked me in the car on the way to school this morning who won the election. And the silence that followed when I told them was awful. I thought as a society we were better than this. I'm so angry and sad for them, and for all the other women and people that aren't straight white men. What in the actual fuck is wrong with people?

8 and 10 year old daughters here. Only about 22% of the population voted for him, if that makes you feel any better about anything. Probably not but I am surprised how many people sat this one out. I really thought the vote count would exceed 2020 and people would rally for a pivot away from hate. Wrong again.

I am trying to keep it positive for my daughters. I started to explain inflation this morning and they got sidetracked thinking toys could get less expensive and I just left it at that.

stbmrstgapp told me this morning that the election results fundamentally impact her desire to have a second kid. i honestly don't blame her.

My wife already asked me if I thought having the first one was the right idea.

Which...I get her point. I don't put much stock into the "how could you bring a child into this world" thing as people have been saying that forever and we're still here...but it sure doesn't feel great.

I admit it does make me question whether I want to raise him in a county that is tilting more and more towards the modern conservative maga world view. I can handle some kooky ideas combined with "don't let the government tell me what to do" libertarian-conservatism, but I don't know that I'm up for an annual battle to keep fringe nutjobs off the school board, public health commission, etc.

Or you know, dealing with vaccines becoming illegal, having to supplement your own drinking water with fluoride so your kids grow up with teeth, and navigating an educational system where the fucking department of education has been abolished and the kids learn only about jeebus
Those are actual proposals floated in the late stages of the campaign. With senate/house and supreme court in hand I'm not so sure these are as hyperbolic as they sound.

I tried to explain to my youngest daughter today that democracy and freedom through self-determination are not destinations we reach, but a process that we are constantly involved in with each other. Now is a chance to recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of making this a country we can all be proud of. I'm an optimist and try and remind myself that Trump has only ever kept a fraction of the promises he's ever made, but with two daughters it is disappointing and slightly depressing to think they are walking into a future with less rights and bodily autonomy then their grandmothers had.

as this is the Fatherhood thread, I need to limit my comments. The one thing I would offer tonight for those of us with young children, is try to conduct ourselves with behavior we want our children to emulate. !

Just actual proposals? I'm pretty sure parts of Idaho already have all of that implemented.

It makes a lot of sense. That sense of joy and curiosity is the foundation of what will power them through life’s ups and downs.

I believe my girls can help make the world a better place and this election did nothing to change that, even if it feels a little darker. The world needs good people. Giving in is giving up and that’s not an option.

Today I got to walk my 18yo through the whole emergency roadside service thing when her Forester threw a rod on I-90 between Missoula and Butte, leaving her stranded. She got it towed to a nearby town and fortunately her boyfriend lives in Butte and was able to come get her. From what I can tell and what the towtruck driver said the engine is toast.

When you have two daughters living away from home driving the roads of America you keep your phone close and ringer volume up.
