Awesome! I took my 10 year old for her first backpacking trip this weekend too. We also didn't sleep, that doesn't seem to change.

I took my nearly three year old camping this weekend for two nights. It was her sixth camping trip this year. She did sleep, but was so tired from having fun and waking up earlier than normal that she had a few extra tantrums, and passed out earlier than normal when we got home. She loves camping. When it’s time to leave she says “I don’t want to go home, I want my campsite!” I’m totally exhausted and typing this from a horizontal position. This is the price of memories.

I walked my daughter to school for the very first time this morning. I know it's the best thing for her but JFC it's also tough letting go. She is so gentle, anyone being anything but gentle with her might turn me into Dexter.

Yeah, being a parent certainly brings out the mama/papa bear in folks haha. As for being gentle... Im teaching my boy (about to turn 3) how to play hard/rough but also have a conscience about it and its a really fine line haha. So, if another kid dogpiles her or throws a ball into her face, just remember that they are learning too haha. And if an adult yells at her and makes her cry, just try to remember how frustrated you can become dealing with just your own children, now think about dealing with 25+ children that age on a daily basis... some nerves are going to get frayed, and its a learning experience to see what it looks like when an adult gets really pissed off.

What sports have folks gotten their kids into at the age of 3? We did a 6-week soccer class recently, but want to do a different sport next. Id love to get him into a wrestling club, but the youngest i can find around me starts at 5yrs old. We are thinking gymnastics next, and then maybe basketball after that. Any other recommendations for 3yr olds? Skiing is out for now because it was OBSCENELY expensive, so we will just do that between ourselves and another family right down the street.

Back in the 70's, there were no "sports" programs for kids under 5. Before our kids were 5 we had them in Fit By Five classes and a drown proofing classes at the HS pool. When I was sub 5, we just threw stones and sticks at other kids for sport.

    Braver than I am too

I joined the club on 7/19 when my wife was induced and popped out a little 5lb 10oz boy. He’s doing great and gaining weight well.

    But no camping yet

Congrats dude! Ours was born on Aug 3 at 5lbs 7oz. Consistently eating 3-4oz every 2-3 hours, he's now right at 8lbs. Feels like we're entering a bit of a fussy phase now, which is tough. One day at a time..

It was REAL good news at the 1 month checkup when the doc gave us the go ahead to stop waking him up to feed at night. We were on the 2.5 hour schedule trying to push weight gain since he didn't gain much until we started with formula.

Especially because we really had to wake him...its one thing if he wakes you up, but really not fun to have to set your own alarm and then go wake a baby that was happily sleeping. Now we'll give him his last feed around 11:30 and usually make it to 5-5:30 in one go (although I'm sure that will change as soon as I've typed this).

No backpacking yet, but FWIW, your post gave me the nudge I needed to decide to book a last minute cancellation this weekend at the Many Glacier hotel and see how it goes. It's our favorite part of Glacier, and we haven't made it there this season.

I will say though...we ponied up for the SNOO smart bassinet and it has been awesome.

Curious to see how he sleeps in a pack and play in the hotel, because he responds really well to the sound and motion of the SNOO. If he starts fussing, it just ramps up the action and puts him right back down.

So far, 100% satisfied with that purchase (even though the company is being a dick and implementing a subscription model to try and hurt the used market). Buying the "certified pre-owned" during their frequent 25% off sales and then planning to resell at the going rate actually makes it not that expensive over the 6 months you can use it.

yep we also use the Snoo

he wakes up on his own to eat during the middle of the night - first starts getting wiggly and then eventually has a melt down if he gets too hungry. we're hoping we can stretch his feedings to be further apart, but as of yet, that hasn't really worked.

on the advice of jackattack we got a little portable white noise machine to keep him sleeping in the tent, and it worked great.

We used the Snoo (got one loaned by a friend) and I am not convinced it is a miracle device. Maybe it helped a little bit. It probably depends on the kid.

White noise machines however are god's gift to parents. We have one for the bedroom, and a portable one for both camping and travelling. They even help me sleep, so it's a win-win.

Enjoy it, it is scary. Too soon you will be doing that at college, then first 'big' girl apartment in whichever scary city far from home she settles in to start really adulting. It's been said too many times, but can't be repeated enough, enjoy each moment now.

Took my 16 month old in the backpack carrier up Tumalo yesterday. Weather was gorgeous and it was so nice to be out. I should have heeded the first little whiney squeals coming from the backpack about 3/4 of the way up. I ended up walking the last mile and a half with the backpack carrier on my back and the little girl on my arm, all 25 lbs of her. We made it, but my shoulder was pretty much locked tight by the the time I put her in her car seat. At least she was happy! I since readjusted the carrier, I should have noticed she was sitting pretty low in there. Live and learn.

Dropped our daughter off at Kindergarten this morning as well. The teachers aides immediately whisked her off to her classroom once she got her nametag that had the classroom assignment - before we could say goodbye / we love you. The staff definitely have this down, otherwise the first day would be 2 hours of sobbing parents holding up the check-in line, us included!

Damn, time flies, 16 months already? Have you done any skinning/XC with her in that thing? I did a lot with each of my 2 kids, but once each hit 28 lbs that was enough for my back to handle, then it was into the ski trailer only. I really loved being in waxless gear and getting out in the snow with them in the Poco, much more mobile and practical on ungroomed terrain than the ski trailer (which I've used on ungroomed terrain, but that's mostly Type 2.5 fun). Miss those days ... now that the kids are 3 and 5 I'm only allowing one kid at a time in the ski trailer, that thing got too dang heavy for me to sidestep up gentle slopes with both kiddos in it.

I'm still bitter that Bachelor won't allow kids in backpacks in their XC area, even if just going through the Common Corridor out to the highway. I get the liability concern, especially with Oregon having blown up liability releases, but it's frustrating. I took my kid to Todd Lake on my back while we were camped in the RV lot a couple winters ago, mostly it was annoying to have to carry my skis both ways through the Common Corridor.
