So my daughter is almost three and has been in a big “I need mommy” phase, but I’ve discovered a hack. She loves riding on my bike with the Shotgun/macride/whatever seat, and she loves car camping because she gets to snuggle and sleep in the SUV with a parent instead of sleeping in her own bed at home. So last weekend I say she is going camping and biking with dad, and she’s like “by Mama!”

We drove two hours east of Seattle in part to find smooth/easy trails near camping on the east side of the cascades which proved worthwhile. She just can’t handle really bumpy terrain on the bike.

The only downside is she loves being on the bike so much that even when we’ve ridden several miles and it is time for lunch/nap, she is screaming and fighting to stay on. I have to distract her with something fun like a little animal in the forest to get her to transition. She napped the whole two hour drive home, like clockwork!

The Shotgun Seat was the single best MTB related purchase I ever made. My daughter loved riding "our bike" so much. Kept it to easy singletrack to keep it safe but so much fun to get out in the woods with her while "she drives" and "daddy is the engine"

Man I can't wait to be the engine on the bike as opposed to on foot. We banged out a 12+ mile hike this weekend with a new pack Ms Boissal bought that is supposed to fit her better, figured I'd give it a try as it's lighter than the pack I've been using. My back feels like it was set on fire and little Miss Boissal decided to whack me in the face with a trekking pole for my efforts...

Yeah, I found the hiking baby carrier to be horrible too with our huge babies. The baby Bjorn type carrier was actually much better on my back, although much hotter.

Last season was all with a baby bjorn when she was light enough to be on my chest. Did the first hike of this season with it and she was too heavy, had to move her to the back in a Kelty carrier. It works well but is quite heavy and puts her weight fairly high up and away from my torso, meaning I have to lean forward to compensate and my back hates it. The new pack is a Deuter, it puts her closer to my body and the pack is lighter but the compromise is less padding, different type of pain.
I think when they hit 25 lbs you're either built real strong and can handle the weight with no issue or you're a regular build like me and things get uncomfortable.

I should have added we had a Bjorn style carrier that worked for back carry. But harder for kid to look around, so after they ride in other style might complain about being sandwiched against your back.

We had an Osprey Poco carrier which I found pretty uncomfortable for anything over an hour. Something about the hip belt was weird and it would dig into my hip. Anyways we got the lighter, Poco LT and I have found it way better. More comfortable and lighter so the overall amount of weight is less

Boissal et al, we did a harness style carrier for as long as possible until it was killing my back for even short amounts of time. Ergo baby was the shit.

When it became clear that we needed to upgrade I went to REI and tried on everything. I think it took three visits to convince a then ten month old. We settled on the Deuter pro which is heavy AF but adjusts really well for the parent and has the most built in features for the kid. So many people recommended the Osprey but I wasn’t convinced after trying. The other saving grace was that mom had her own harness that was adjusted to her torso for quick trips so both parents have a dialed setup.

We have been hiking less in SoCal but still get out a few times a month and the Deuter still carries great with a 30# two year old.

Shot from the slog out of Rustic Canyon. We had a really nice walk up in the Santa Monicas w/ ocean views, dropped down into the canyon for lunch, and trudged through the water and past landslides to get back to the car. Hike ends at the polo fields.

big time fan of the poco plus here. I get why it doesn't work for everyone, but I've been happily using it for city walks instead of a stroller, so me and the boy are ergo-adapted to it by the time we loaded it up in the mountains (or beach in the case below)

I found that once the kids are old enough to walk on uneven terrain, but they just get tired at some point, then going to an Ergo/Bjorn in backpack mode is good because their weight is like right over your hips and close to your back, could do 35+ lbs no problem (and I only weigh 140) - but then you lose carrying capacity and it’s not fun when hot. Still beats a melting down kid who is refusing to take one more step anyways. I have fond memories of each of my sleeping kids in the Poco while i was out on my waxless skis getting a good workout just tromping around in low woods, breaking trail etc. Good times.

Macride/Shotgun, long bike frame, tall parent, small kid, all good. Short frame, or short parent, or big kid you have a limited window of use. I had to start using my FF helmet just so that my kid wouldn’t smash my face with her helmet. But I was able to still do some flow / super easy rollable jump lines with my older kid at age 5.

We had two Deuters - a Comfort Pro and an Active SL for my wife. They were great for hiking and mellow skins to take the boys with us. I agree on them holding well above 30lbs too. We just passed them on

Lil Miss Boissal started daycare a couple weeks ago. Already brought the black lung back to the house. Tough adjustment for everyone, she was fine the first couple days before realizing this was not a temporary thing but now she wails the second she sees the building and half of the pictures we get throughout the day show her looking red and puffy faced sitting by herself. Getting on the 1 nap schedule in a room with 7 other kids is rough so she's super tired, doesn't want to eat, and her mood is utter shit when I pick her up. Her mom is just about as sad and I'm in the middle catching shit. Good time!

    How old is she?

Mine is set to start preschool/daycare when she turns three in November. Tales of the inevitable plague abound. She loves being with other kids and I think she is very ready for it, but I still feel a little sad thinking about her being away from home all day.
