Larry McMurtry was one of my favorite authors. I've read at least a dozen of his books. They're not all great, but The Last Picture Show is up there with Huckleberry Finn and The Great Gatsby as "the great American novel". I gave a copy to my kid--I think it was the only book he actually read in high school.
