Looking at pictures of that boat, it occurs to me, there's no way for the captain to see where the boat is going. No wonder it got stuck.

They got pilots to pilot the ships, I'm betting they wished they booked a couple of Tugs, you don't think they use GPS or sft ?

Those canal pilots know that canal like the back of their hands. Only issue is when they have a cut or something on the hand, it tends to throw them off.

See that pointy bit that sticks up off the bow? That’s called a Jack Staff and is used to know where the front of the boat is from the pilot house.

You should know that, growing up around the Edmund Fitzgerald

You know, if someone did this for a Halloween party and just stood in the hallway blocking the bathroom the whole night, that would be hilarious.
I've concluded that DJSapp was never DJSapp, and Not DJSapp is also not DJSapp, so that means he's telling the truth now and he was lying before.

Maybe if the Edmund Fitzgerald had a jack staff it would still be hauling ore on the Great Lakes. (never knew that about the jack staff, very cool. although I didn't see either that bridge or the jack staff in the photo I looked at. Are you sure it isn't photoshopped? I wonder if it has cameras like my Subaru--if I tried to steer my Forester into a snow bank it would likely steer itself away.)

That would be great. Well, it's going to be either that or dressing up in drag as Ms. Ann Thrope for my Halloween costume this year.

Oh but the Fitz did! (Maybe more of a bowsprit, but hey)

And you’re probably right, I guarantee the Ever Given and every other modern ship is more digital than mechanical but these bits stick around in case that shit fails. Or that’s the plan at least.

And you know, we can’t talk of the Edmund Fitzgerald without playing the song. Them’s the rules.

Spending a few stormy days on the Keweenaw in November is an experience worth seeking out.

Apparently paying extra for a tug to accopany the sjip was optional which may now become mandatory ?

The capt is ultimately responsible but I imagine the capt gets all kinds of communication from head office as to what they want him to do what they will pay for go or no go even in bad weather

    so who knows WTF happened

Judging by their navigational antics pre-entry, I'd venture a guess that the Cap and crew were drunk AF.

I still have not seen any evidence the captain or crew have given a public statement. It's probably gonna take awhile to heal.

Was the Crew / Captain Japanize?

I remember reading the boat was Japanese Flag. So does that mean a Japanese Captain? Why I am even curious, I have no idea?

Also wanted to shout out to the salvage company who got it out. That was a hell of an accomplishment that surprised pretty much everyone.

you mean when they were drawing the penis on the navigation tracking screen ?

I read that as they arrived, either they drop anchor and shutdown or drive around for a bit to keep headway until it's their turn to enter which would be easier and keeps the ship ready to go

    the crew was Indian
