    Murder Among the Mormons

Jared Hess seems to have a pretty good handle on the Utah/Idaho culture. His newest documentary(?) on the Hoffman story is pretty interesting. I’m one episode in and it pretty much goes along with what I found when I moved here. In 1995 when I moved here the story was still reverberating in ripples. I was intrigued and researched it a fair amount.

It’s a fascinating story on how a con man used religion against itself to profit.

I read a book about it - just before I moved to Utah in 1995 too. Weird story. Will have to add it to the queue.

Somebody told me about this the other day and I checked out the trailer and it seemed like it would be a good watch. The wife and I will likely watch the 3 episodes over the weekend.

    Thx bob!

I’m on the (minor) injury couch today, and this has helped.

I'd watch hours of interviews with this guy. The scene with him and Hoffman and the uzi was comedy gold.

For a guy who moved to Utah in 84 as a 12 year old kid, this trip down memory lane is fantastic. All the Anchors I grew up with, and the fact the lead cop is basically a ski bum is outstanding.

This happened not long after I moved there and it really had a huge impact on the state on a lot of levels.

It needed more Ken Sanders. That guy could be a show in himself.

I love the concept of forging the LDS church history only to sell it back to them so they could quash a fake version of themselves. Goes to show how they really know the whole thing is bunk.

Thanks for the recco BobMc, watched it over the last few nights. Loved the part where the guy with the consecrated oil commands Hofmann to live.

Ha! Maybe I'll give it a go the next time I'm on a rig.

Years ago I got called out on a super sick older lady, can't remember what exactly was going on, but it was a load and go situation. As the stretcher is headed out the door, two brethren show up and demand that we wait while they give her the oil blessing. My partner, crusty old medic, said something along the lines of "God already sent me, now get out of my way." There was some priesthood flexing after that but we took off.

Man, this show hammered home how different Utah is, and was even more so then.
After leaving, then going back, then leaving again you really notice how peculiar Zion can be. Also noticed how much it has changed, become more like the rest of the country. I mean the whole of the US has unfortunately homogenized, but Utahs oddness has been softened by influx of kooks like you. For good and bad...
