We have a jack russell/pug mix that was an accident after someone brought their unneutered pug to a barn party in Rochester. She is the perfect city dog; happy to lay in the sun all day while we are out of the house, full go when we take her to the park. Equally adept at being the world's most pitiful dog and terrorizing alley rats.
She has the skin/eye problems of a pug and the anxiety of a JR but the health problems are easy to deal with OTC drops and diet, behavior with consistent walks and a good chew toy to keep her occupied.
So cute it's hard to get upset when you catch her doing things she's not supposed to.

I have some recent experience with this...if you're getting an adult dog as opposed to a puppy, regardless of the source, take them for a practice walk someplace where they'll see walkers, runners, kids, other dogs, bikes, and cars. If they're a pain in the ass when exposed to any of those stimuli, figure out if that's something you want to spend time working on, and if you can live with it if they never get over it.

They also get stepped on in my house. A lot. His food motivation however is stronger than his don't get stepped on motivation. If humans are doing something in the kitchen it must mean food. It doesn't help that he's slowly going blind. Probably need to get him a seeing eye dog eventually.

Saw a Burnese-Corgi mix the other day, the Burnogri. Burnese coloring and coat, with a Corgi body.
Move upside and let the man go through...

Not sure I ever responded in this thread, but as a guy who loves dogs, I will admit they are a lot of work, responsibility and costly to keep in great food, health, etc. Thing is, they are so worth it all. My kids had the great fortune to always have animals in the home whether bunnies, cats or dogs and they both have told me how much they appreciated that. So suck it up dad, I think you will enjoy the journey.

I see got your dog. Congrats.
Just know:
My dog was so terrible that the ex-wife, in the divorce papers, DEMANDED that I take the family dog as part of property settlement.
OTOH, I gladly accepted.
Congrats again! It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.
I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.
