Another 2.6" of rain in the last day and a half and another inch the two days before that have this place thoroughly soaked (again). It got cool too so everything is winding down, there's black rot and mold and late blight and all the stuff that comes with the end but it's still producing. Parsnips oughta be soon, turnips are finally moving along, late potato plants are looking promising and the tomatoes just won't stop
Oh and the peppers, holy cow what happened! There's over 20 on the few plants left and they're going crazy. I thought they wanted hot weather. I think I figured something out though, don't nurse those early ones and wait a month or more just clip them. Every time I've let them go plants take forever to really do well but the plants I clipped the early growth off are going nuts now.

So I had a pruning party this morning, it took 2 cups of coffee. This afternoon when I could see what was going on I went at it again. There's no more death and disease in my mass of tomato plants. It turns out that plants I thought would be 5 or so feet tall are 15-18 foot long vines of tastiness. Tomorrow I need to make more supports to stretch these things out because I used everything I had readily available. They're currently producing like mad! There's gotta be another 100 fruit on there and I took off at least that many today, about 40 were split open Tomorrow will also be pico de gallo and salsa day after I find some mason jars.
I did some looking and there's easily another batch of beans hiding in there, I'm stoked
I thought the brassicas had a chance with the cool fall weather but the third 10" rain month in a row had other ideas
So fast asleep I could pet it

I never thought I'd see the day that bumblebees were celebrated. Pollinators. Any pollinators.

It just keeps coming
I'll be pulling peppers again soon. There are easily a dozen Hungarian Hot Wax Peppers almost ready and just turning orange so another week or so until they go red. They cayenne plants are going crazy with dozens of peppers on each plant now with lotsa flowers too and the last green pepper plant left standing has 2 big ones and 15 or so small ones.
Garlic going in the ground tomorrow.

I pulled the plug now that we've had a few freezing nights and more on the way. Overall it was an ok year with a few standout performers and a few near total failures, just like every other year. The pepper and eggplant pots are snug in the sunroom for final ripening.
45# of green tomatoes, most of which I expect to ripen.
Around 25# of various winter squash, which is much better than usual for us.ride bikes, climb, ski, travel, cook, work to fund former, repeat.

It’s gonna freeze here on Tuesday, I grabbed all the bell peppers yesterday. Usually my peppers are pretty small, this year they made the grocery store versions look small.
I harvested the rest of them before Tuesday’s freeze.
Grabbed the hotter peppers today, anaheims, shishitos, jalapenos, carolina reapers, and scorpion peppers.
All my neighbors, employees, friends have more than they can use. If anyone here in the valley wants hot as fuck peppers let me know, otherwise I’ll toss them.

Those are badass bells. A friend here made that happen one year by doping her plants (nutrient injector in the irrigation). What's your secret?
I grew Scorpions one year but they are so hot as to be essentially useless.
We have a new one this year: sweet habaneros. They look, smell, and taste like habernos but have zero heat. It's kind of awesome to get that great habanero fruitiness without burning yourself into oblivion. It's a little bit of a mind fuck though.ride bikes, climb, ski, travel, cook, work to fund former, repeat.

Not much left in the garden - some straggler cherry/grape tomatoes and green peppers.....couple rows of carrots and some parsley/chives etc.
But did plant 2 rows of Radishes in Mid-August after freeing up some space.....
...checked them today and wow - for 60 days from seed to golfball-size not too shabby.....taste good too (albiet heartburn causing)

Based on my Google-fu, no. They look like Boletes, which are reputedly delicious. Lucky you!

Thanks climber. That’s what we are leaning towards. My wife just dug this out and I’m not sure I trust this man with my life:

I've always found that musicians who are really into mushrooms are super solid on giving advice.
And are you holding that book with your foot or your hand? Looks like some big-toe-action grappling that book.

Bringing the lulz even into the garden thread!
My tomatoes are turning much faster this year than in the past. We're still losing very few though.
The mild habaneros are amazing but so strange to bite into. The smell is all habanero and I immediately think "I've made a huge mistake", but the heat never comes. Highly recommended. I'm stoked to still be creating meals mostly from the garden.ride bikes, climb, ski, travel, cook, work to fund former, repeat.
