A friend of mine picked up the '22 106 Black Editions and he was skiing really well on them the other day. He bought Vantage 97s at the beginning of the season. Said he had about five days on the 106s and switched back to the 97s for a few runs. Said he felt like he forgot how to ski and had to really focus on turning. He really liked the Vantages early season. I'm interested in the 106 a lot after talking to him.

I haven't mounted my 2022 Ripstick 96 BE 180cm skis yet. I demoed both the 188cm and 180cm lengths a month ago. At 6' and 210 lbs I expected to prefer the longer length but was surprised to like the 180cm better. But I'm a fat old guy and not very powerful or aggressive. I didn't get to try them in deep powder but did ski them in 6" of medium density cut up snow in steep trees and found the shorter length quick turning yet stable, similar to axebiker's comments about 180cm vs 188cm in post #7

I read in SkiTalk post that a reviewer liked the previous 2020 96 BE 181cm best with demo bindings at -1.5 cm since he thought they were a little twitchy at the 0 line on groomers. So I skied the 188cm and 180cm 2022 96 BE with demo bindings both at the center mark and at -1.5cm, for around an hour each. My last combination was 180cm at -1.5cm which I liked best but that could have been from being better adapted to the new skis over time. I didn't notice much difference when I initially changed from 0 to -1.5cm. I'm still not sure where I will mount my new skis. Probably at 0 and not the +1.5 which kc_7777 used in post #68.

I have a short bsl (287mm) and like forward mounts so take that into account.

I’m at -6.5cm (+1.5cm). Going -1.5cm on the 180 will put you at -9.5cm. Still reasonable. And the fact you skied it there, and liked it, I think you’ll be good.

Elan put mount lines from +3cm to -3cm for a reason....so I’m thinking we’re both good at either +1.5cm to -1.5cm....as we’re well within their recommended range.

For those that haven't fondled both, the standard 96 and 106 have quite different flex patterns. The 96 has a pretty round and soft flex, whereas the 106 is definitely not planky but certainly a stiffer flex especially in the forebody. Does anyone know if this also translates to the 96BE vs 106BE?

It was kinda that way with the 2019-2020 Ripsticks too. I haven't skied the 20-21 106, but spent a lot of time on the 20-21 88 and 96, and they had a somewhat progressively "stronger" flex as well. Considering the construction is essentially the same other than the "Quad Rod", I would imagine that the 106 will have a stronger flex in the BE series as well.

I picked up a test pair of the RS 106 181 here from thatdkid a few years back and have been a fan ever since.
A couple months ago I gotta pair of the 2020 BE to replace 'em and was gonna mount the old pair with Shifts for the few days I get out in the BC but with our crappy snow year I never gotta round to it, will have to wait for next year.

I love the light weight of these things and will only add that I've been dreaming about a RS 111 version for BC use.

These are on my list. I just demoed the Kastle ZX108 and the Salomon QST 106. Anybody ridden either of these to compare to the Ripstick 106?
I really liked the Solomon’s ftr. Also where to try the Elans in the West?

    Elan Ripstick 106 2021 Review

Just added the 4th pair of Ripsticks to the family.

For my 10 year old daughter for next ski season (damn you Corbetts). These were $349CDN ....they came with brand new 2021 Attack 11s which I can hopefully sell for a few bucks next fall. As she has other bindings. So maybe $225CDN net? These are pretty high-end kid’s skis.

    Specs:

    148cm Elan Ripstick 86TW
    121-86-110
    13m radius

Love how they even have different mount options even on kids skis....

Never mind. Not interested now. Went to the shop to borrow a Shift jig and ended up coming home with some BEs. Had some P15s in a box so it seemed like a good match. I guess I'll tell you what I think about them next season.

Kind of had the same experience. Had some black STH 16s sitting in a box at home and went in to the shop and came out with some 2022 BE 96’s. I got three days on mine before the season abruptly ended. They are awesome. P15s look good on those.

Skied my first day on the 180 Ripstick 106 last week. Great ski. They do measure short (easily shorter than my 177 M102s). But I never noticed any squirrely behavior at speed so I don't think I would get any benefit from the 188. Maybe if they had a 184 that would be good. In any case, conditions were carvy groomers with a dusting of fresh and they were amazing on that surface. Later in the day I was mostly in mank of one form or another. They don't bash through like the M102s but they are lighter and I like that. Also, I felt they actually hold an edge as well or even better than the M102, which surprised me. The one thing I felt in the mank was that I would like the tails to release a little easier, so I think I'll move the mount back -1 cm. Just comparing them side by side to the M102, the Elan recommended mount point is at least 1 cm forward of the M102. I like the tail release of the M102s, so I think moving the mount back a tad will help with that. That review linked above talking about how Elan mount points are always forward was interesting. I don't usually mess with mount points but in this case I think I will. Anyway, super fun skis. I could see turning these into touring skis in the future, or possibly buying another pair. Looking forward to trying them in some soft snow, I have no doubt they will perform well.

their sizing was is kind of puzzling if only when compared to how other ski brands size their skis, so if they sized their product like everyone else I would probably have jumped at a 184, instead I spent time trying to decide which size, then I blew an ACL and never bought anything,

so going forward I would probably buy shorter but its still puzzling IMO

    Elan Ripstick 106 2021 Review

    Thanks to meesta and japonada.
I like to try out a new ski without doing any tuning at all, and these things were great in crappy conditions without any tuning. I’m definitely going to like these. Kinda the opposite of conundrum’s colorways.

    Elan Ripstick 106 2021 Review

    Hey,

Blister just posted a review for the 2021 Ripsticks (2021s are stiffer than the previous versions of Ripsticks from 2020 and prior years) and the 2022 Black Editions (stiffer yet again). I own both 2021 106s with Shifts and 2022 Black Edition 96s with STH 16s. I pretty much agree with all of it. The 2022 Black Editions are really great skis.....light and pretty easy to ski yet can still be pushed quite hard.

I noticed Blister’s Luke Koppa decided on +2.5cm (-7.2cm) as his favourite mount on the 2021 106 Ripstick, which is where I’ve mounted mine. He and I view mount points the same way...or I’m stubborn and a bit dull too?

".......mount recommendations are for suckers (read: I’m stubborn and a bit dull), I often end up moving the bindings forward on directional skis like the Ripstick 106. I settled on +2.5 cm (about -7.2 cm from true center) as my personally preferred mount point. There, the ski does feel a bit more punishing since there’s more tail behind the bindings, but I didn’t feel like I lost any ability to engage and drive the shovels, and the upside was that I could ski it a bit more centered and it felt nicer in the air. That’s not something I think most people should be doing, but if you’re coming from more forward-mounted skis, it’s worth considering. And this is basically the same thing I thought about the previous generation of the Ripsticks — most people should mount recommended, but you can mount a cm or two in front of that if you want a more balanced feel -Luke Koppa."

Hope it's okay to double post but thought it made sense to post in both threads if people are subscribed or whatever:

I'm in the market for a cheap all-mountain ski for Salt Lake City and am between the 2018 Legend X106 and the 2020 Elan Ripstick 106 (used options available that I've found). Both are same length. Wonder if you all have any thoughts.

I mostly ski backcountry, so a big resort setup is not really my primary interest. I also have a pair of Kastle MX84s and love them for groomer days.

I'm trying to add a second ski for days when there is fresh snow and I am in the resort. My worry with getting the Legend X106 is that it will be too stiff for me. I think I'm a decent skier and not afraid to put weight into the planks when turning, but I'm only 5'7" 155 lbs and don't ski super fast. I enjoy the feel of making a lot of turns more than I enjoy the rush from nuking down the slope. On an open slope, I'm more directional than shmeary, but I struggle to ski well, directionally, in tight trees if that makes sense. My worry with the Ripstick is that it will be too light and I'll get knocked around in the chop.

I previously skied a QST 106 and thought they were too slow to initiate a turn. I thought they were built for someone who wanted to ski way faster than me and make larger radius turns.

Any advice on what to get?

Just took delivery of 2022 Rip Stick 106 Black 180, bought these based on the numbers. Replaces Kore 105’s in my quiver.

Nice….the Black Editions are really good skis. Lightweight feel (1,710 gm for the 96) but with power. Pretty playful too, for the impressive edge grip which makes them pretty versatile.

I got three days on my 96’s before the mountain closed. Surprising the level of stability and vibration dampening so you can ski them pretty hard. Way better (for me) than 177cm M102s.

Where did you mount your new 106 Blacks?

    I went +1.5cm on my 180cm 96’s.

    Rec is -8.0cm, so I’m at -6.5cm.

I went on the line after after much deliberation. I did some math on 2 other skis I ski often & really like the Mount point so on the line for these. This kept the same tip/tail ratio. Understanding tip/tail rocker & taper all factor in but this has worked for me. Time will tell.

I was about to buy some blaze 106's for a 90% BC / 10% resort setup in Vermont. But my wife is about to be laid off, and we're going to pretend that wont be a huge burden financially for a bit and get some Ikon passes.

So with that said, plan is to spend more time at resorts, with a bit of traveling if we can swing it, maybe more like 50/50. I have shifts, thinking about going with the 106 (188), standards. I was on the Armada tracer 100's last year and wanted more float, and also a bit stiffer. I overpowered the tails a lot, and never felt that comfortable on them, especially on groomers, although I did like them on quick turns in the trees, since they seemed pretty easy to pivot. I also have some Mantras (from 2007, yikes, I bought them used here over 10 years ago) that I still love and will get some use certain days.

I'm 6'4", 210. I was looking at Sick Day 104's, the Blaze, and the Black Edition of these, also Rangers. Any thoughts on how these will do for me?
