Sounds like quite a few similarities between air and rail industries. Positive train control (PTC) is probably going to be the drone-flying rail equivalent. Some of PTC is common sense and very much worth implementing but it also eliminates jobs that pay well (albeit with some of the worst schedules). General consensus among salty conductors and engineers seems to be current two-man crews will be further reduced to one-man-only crews, with the one-man as a CYA measure for the companies.

Another BS corp move. Fight PTC for years because it costs money to implement. Have people die because it wasn't implemented. Finally, kicking and screaming, move to install and implement it but then try to scratch the money back from their own workers. What a load of shit.

It's the same. There's a constant battle between the flight ops training dept and the bean counters, who see training as a cost that can be trimmed. It even comes up in contract negotiations.

The answer of course is that lack of safety will ultimately cost more, but they use the MC Escher-esque argument that statistically air travel is extremely safe already. Uh yeah... BECAUSE of training.

I mean, we've already automated away the flight engineer, the navigator, the radio operator.
It seems conceivable that the copilot could soon be in an office somewhere.
Edit to add: the tail gunner, the bombardier...

PTC combined with some of Tesla's self driving collision avoidance hardware/software for triggering braking for something fowling the track and rails could be fully automated, and soon.

Every economic system since mankind "advanced" beyond subsistence agriculture has been evil.

I never thought about that, but that’s a good point.

Which leads me to one of my closely-held operating principles: people suck.

The defendant makes a settlement offer of free tickets which the plaintiffs eat up - proving that they weren't in fact traumatized.

Meanwhile UA threatens P&W and receives price concessions on future business.

Pretty much sums up why we’re living in the world we’re living in today. No one can just accept the fact that shit happens.
