And that could be why we now have such a consolidation in the ski industry that led to this very thing (Mega Passes). Just a guess.
I recall $1500 passes for spots like Squaw. Alpine was maybe $900. Kirkwood was $400. The network pass at KW was $299. There were ways to pay less.

It was still less crowded at KW than Squaw back then. Of the two, Squaw seems to have been more hurt by the changes.

I think it is the multi pass that has hurt things a lot more than the pass price. KW would rarely get visits from other season pass holders. Even south like locals would have to dish out more money if they wanted to ski in their backyard (Heavenly) as well as KW 30 minutes away. You had to choose between Squaw and Alpine.

Anyway. It is not the price of the pass but what it buys you.

For instance, a Squaw local now can ski Alpine next door, Mammoth a few hours away and also hit up Big Sky for a week and Jackson the next and Snowbird the next, so if the snow is poor at home, and you have a car and gas, you can clog up someone else’s lift lines.

From my perspective, my KW Pass has gone up over 50%, is not a multi pass, but every Tahoe and Epic pass holder can come make my home hill more crowded. It was better when it was just us KW pass holders and folks buying day tickets.

But I’ve been saying this for almost a decade. Vail suck.

Just did the inflation calc...if memory serves, I used to get a midweek Taos pass with lots of holiday blackouts for today’s equivalent of about $2,000.
We skied shittier gear, we had ratty clothes, hitch hiking...
    It was fine.

I seem to remember the Native American tribes in eastern Washington wanting to build a casino and ski resort on Mt Adams. With a gondola to the summit. Bet that would’ve been popular with this crowd.

They still sell a Squaw(& Alpine) pass for $1500, but why would you?

The interesting calculation would be how many days it took to break even on a pass in the good old days, if anyone can find real numbers for day and pass prices--not what people think they remember. That figure is a big part of people's decision to buy a pass. At today's pass and daily prices buying a pass is a no brainer.
I have a completely unreliable recollection that the break even might have been as high as 30 days at Squaw. With tickets $200 more or less, depending on the day, that's a $6000 pass. Unless the areas want to drop the price of a day ticket.
I remember one number for certain--under 5 was $5, or free to ride the pony tow at Squaw.

In the early aughts (2004?) Mt Hood Meadows approached the Yakima tribe with a proposal for a ski resort, a bunch of golf courses and resort housing.

    There were some problems:
-The mountain is sacred to the Yakimas. They had fought for 100 years to get that side of the mountain back from the feds, due to an error in the original treaty. Finally got it back in the 70s. Tribal members thought it a little “imperialist” to give it back up to Whites and voted against it.

    - even if they had voted for the resort, Return of the land to the tribe stipulated it would be managed as essentially Wilderness (per the ‘64 Act). Gondolas and golf course don’t fit that use.

    - The environmental community in the area mounted a major fight and would have kept ologists busy for decades.

    RE: Break Even Points.

I know people who use that to justify their Pass purchase. If that works for you, whatever.

At my hill there was a time when an all access pass was as high as $1500.00 & kids under 10 skied free (2000), however the tram and the chairlifts & Mountain were not crowded.

I would gladly pay for that experience again but that ship sailed. The county has seen a population increase from 68K in 2000 to 114K in 2019 and a LOT of them ski. And then there are the fucking Mega passes.

Nothing is ever as good as it was or how we remember it.

I would gladly pay for that experience again.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

That’s awesome until your local scales back their hours so they’re only open when they know they’ll be busy.
We’ve had various versions of that where I live and it sucks ass.

That sounds about right. I was trying to decide between buying a KW or AM pass. AM was like $900 and KW was $399. Day tickets at KW were like $70 then, so it became a no brainier. Bought KW and then skied AM a few days that season. I’m guessing this was around 2002.

Squaw was so out of reach for me. Pass or day ticket.
