Anything cool between SLC and Big Sky?
Driving up that way to ski with the lady. Never been north of SLC.
Anything must stop and see? Hot Springs?
Looks like we go through Pocatello and Idaho falls. Headed back through SW Wyoming if there is anything cool going the other route.
Never been to Yellowstone either.
Thanks for the recommendations.

uhhh. the fucking tetons?
those are pretty goddamn cool. even if you just are driving through.
in idaho - craters of the moon (wild lavarock landscapes), ebr-1 (the first nuclear reactor to produce useable electricity, closed in the winter but i shit you not, that is my favorite tourist attraction ANYWHERE - and i've been to the taj mahal, the louvre, the hermitage, etc etc - THERE ARE FUCKING NUCLEAR REACTORS JUST SITTING IN A PARKING LOT), lava hot springs (meh, but might be worth a few hours stop)

the list is long, great drive if you take your time. How much are you allowing on both ends?
for starters get off the interstate, go up through Logan and hug the WY border for tetons etc, think the road through Yellowstone is closed in winter, never drove north of Jackson in Winter, but still you get the idea.
You arent missing anything in Pocvatelo or Idaho Falls

You won't see much of Yellowstone in the winter unless you go over to Gardiner/north end, which is quite a ways out of your way...

Mesa Falls is worth a look.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

Normally I'd agree but the last few times I've been it has been slipping considerably.
Depending on weather(road closures) it's worth it to swing by the tetons then bust through the potato fields to west and then north to Big Sky.
Also get some BBQ from carnie and the boys at Riverhouse. Man I need some pork street tacos.

Roads through Yellowstone are definitely closed right now.
Maybe a snow coach ride from West Yellowstone into the park?

Lava hot springs, mesa falls, and the TACO bus are on the short list. Thanks, mags.
Skiing big sky sat/sunday if any mags are around. We are solid skiers.

Wow those tacos must be crazy good for a detour like that.

Pebble Creek outside of Pocatello is good for a quick ski if it has snow. They sold single ride tickets when I lived there so you could ride the lift up, tour the back side (where the better skiing is) and then ski back down.

Targhee. Easy detour.
Some people are like Slinkies... not really good for anything, but you still can't
help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs...

If you are cyclists, there has to be a fatbike rental spot near Island Park. Just a guess.

False. From SLC to Big Sky, you pass through West Yellowstone. Rent a snowmobile. I've had a ton of fun right outside the park too. Endless trails that cross into Idaho. Flying across Hebgen Lake at warp speed is also super rad. You can do park tours to see that side of the park in a pretty magical time of year. You can REALLY see a lot of wildlife then without 99.9% of the crowds.
Disclaimer: Not sure how much COVID has effected operations so you'll want to call ahead and see what's up.

This is a decent idea, but with his apparent time constraints, probably also "out of his way" relatively speaking. Bottom line - if driving, he'll need to go to Gardiner/Mammoth to see even a small bit of Yellowstone. And that's quite a ways out of his way...
And no, I'm not going to count that 20 miles of 191 that is technically in the park as "seeing Yellowstone."

You can rent a snowmobile and get on groomed trails up high fairly fast (Two Top) in West Yellowstone. Going into the park would be cool too, all guided though.
Pebble Creek is a decent idea based on his time constraints but I'm wondering if it's brutally low tide there now.
if you are in a rental from SLC to BS, good luck in a storm. You will need even better luck on a sunny day with all the ice patches through Island Park area on rental tires.
