Loveland Pass Avalanche Video
Based on the comment in the video it happened on "Friday" so I guess that means the Friday before the video making it 1/8/21? I don't know exactly where "no name peak" is but it looks to be above treeline on a N or E facing aspect and just below a ridgeline. Maurice says they were "excited that the Avy level had actually gone down" which it did move down to Moderate that day although there was a special advisory. Dude is pretty lucky he didn't get beaten to death by rocks. I guess he chose to report it to the local news rather than the CAIC??

Yep, it's just south of Loveland ski area and faces S. You can see ABasin Pali and Beavers in the vid.

This was discussed in the Colorado Snowpack/Weather thread, extensively on several Colorado Backcountry Facebook groups, and was reported to the CAIC.

There was an embarrassing interview with Mario Bro on Colorado Matters today.

The "Accidents" section are incidents in which the CAIC conducts a thorough investigation, which includes all fatal avalanches, but not all avalanches in which people are caught. I don't know how they decide which incidents to investigate. "Observations" can include snowpack observations and avalanche observations with or without human involvement.

The facebook thread was interesting. Most of it was about what I expected, but Maurice at least made noises about re-assessing his approach to conditions like this. We'll see if that happens.

Well, if he reassesses, that's a good thing, but geez!
Try as I might with the useless Facebook interface, I can't find the thread in the Colo BC Ski & Snowboard group.

I take issue with the use of the word "accident." It implies that there's no fault to be assigned, which is rarely the case.

Huh? People get in car accidents all the time and fault is assigned. Accident doesn't imply that there was no reason (and thus no fault), accident implies only that what happened wasn't intended or wanted.

“...avalanche safety training likely saved his life.”
Is luck now part of AIRE 1 curriculum? What an arrogant thing to say.
Edit: I know it’s easy to Monday morning quarterback, but why do so many act like taking a level 1 weekend class is like passing the belay test at your local climbing gym?
