Congrats to Canuck Joe Votto on his 1,000th RBI, done in fantastic fashion on a bomb to right.

Always liked the way that guy plays.

Mets took a chopping last night 20-2.

Several of the Mets players that were with my ex-son-in-law saw playing time last night. Pitcher Tom Szapucki made his major league start and gave them several innings. Szapucki and Anthony were roomies for a while. He had TJ surgery and got dinged several times for breaking rules. Catcher Patrick Mazika as well.

If you've ever seen what comes out of the clubs in The Flats at 3am you'd develop a kink too I'm guessing.

Bernie greased that wheel, but, it really wasn't a bad deal. Basic economics. Long term thinking. Which is in short supply in most jock's minds.

It was a great deal for Bonilla. But the Wilpons made that deal because they thought their returns with Madoff were money in the bank, and if they were making guaranteed returns, it was easy to amortize the payment to Bonilla, and required very little money in then-present day dollars. They thought they were getting a steal when Bonilla agreed to that.

Greased the wheel? It wouldn’t have happened if the Wilpons weren’t getting the (paper) returns from Bernie. Not just the amount on return which wasn’t very crazy but the consistency.

Not really. Listen to that Planet Money podcast I posted above. Bonilla's deal was based on an 8% return on the money, which is what a lot of state pension funds base their calculations on. Well, maybe 7% these days, but, still, you get my drift. Bernie may have been a Ponzi, but one of his smart moves was returning "only" 10-12% a year, year after year, which really wasn't that much better than a 70/30 stock/bond return during the same time. The Wilpons were dumb enough to concentrate so much of their money with one guy.

As The Planet Money guys emphasize, the fact that most think this was a bad deal just proves how financially illiterate a very large majority of Americans are. Especially Met fans. Heh.

Most think it was a dumb deal for the Wilpons. I don't see many people saying it was a bad deal for Bonilla.
