What the hell is going on with the lifts?

Since there is absolutely no stoke in the weather for the east this week (hope you're enjoying all that snow PNW)
Lets figure out why there seem to be a lot of reports so far this season of people falling off the damn lifts (or the lifts themselves falling, 49 North).
Whats going on people? Do need to go back and learn how to ride them again?
So much fun can be had on said lift. You can find your piece of ass, or grass, for the night, or figure out what lines are hitting. So lets try to stay on the lifts.
    Lets say you.
Whats the best use of time while riding the lift (other than reading this post)?

Here in Winter Park it's the resort's fault, and they have no idea what happened:

“When we got lowered off, they gave us each a $5 voucher for Winter Park food. They said they couldn’t do anything more since we are Ikon pass holders.

The way I read in the paper was each person was given a $5 voucher to be used immediately for hot food or hot drink, and WP was quoted as saying they will reimburse each rider in some way. The ikon pass thing was from some poster on Joel's site, probably trying to jab ikon in his own little way and make it seem like it was unfair or that he was discriminated against. That's just how I'm seeing it. Funny how it's gone viral last 24 hours.

It started out with a post on Reddit not Joel's site-- from one of the stuck people. Apparently the only offered to reimburse folks beyond the $5 once they made a stink of it and got media attention.

How about this lift malfunction. (reason 5280 not to trust anything from Russia). Now I know this is only a rope tow but holyshit!

Now I just saw this on Unofficial, and this is one of my big gripes with them is that this is 2 years old. They love recycling old stories. Can't tell you how many times ive seen the story of the NY ski lodge murder (at least twice in just the last year).

Never read my phone on the lift, I am a purist.

I look at the view, toke, or see if I can rub one out before we get to the top.

Jiminy Peak 1/2/21, I'm riding up Berkshire Express and am about 3 chairs from the offload when the lift comes to a halt.
A few seconds later we hear a THUD and I look down to see a kid, no older than 8yo, face down crying in the snow. He fell like 20ft flat on his face. Cherry on top is he was part of a lesson and riding the same chair as his instructor.

Today at Alpine Meadows--certainly not the first time I saw 4 people fall off a chair trying to load it but the first time I ever saw someone have to be evacuated by patrol from the loading ramp--the group's skis were still on the ground when they got tangled up and off.

Prior to the Bristol incident, the one that dominated the new was the son of some broad who's a supposed celebrity (never heard of her) fell 40 feet at Aspen. I'm not sure how anyone survive a 40 ft fall like that. (Its not the fall that kills you, its the sudden stop at the end).

Then there was the entire chair that fell with people in it at 49 Degrees North because of a missing pin. That's every beginners nightmare.

This one may take the cake. A Norwegian Princess (and I don't think they are talking about the cruise line) was injured after jumping out of a chairlift with her daughter. I'm pretty sure they don't teach that at princess school.

I'm guessing there are a couple of factors at work here contributing to so many incidents in such a short time period. First, there seem to be a lot of new skiers out there this season. I know many resorts have sold 2-3 times their normal season pass numbers. So you have lots of inexperienced people. Secondly, most of these happened during the Holiday period when more people are skiing. So when you combine a large number of people and relative inexperience at the same time, it makes sense we have seen a high rate of incidences lately.

The kid in Colorado fell 18-20 feet, not 40. Still must have been scary, but there's no need for sensationalism.

Smart sport to take up new during a pandemic with limited ICU and hospital beds available.

Here is another one where the entire chair fell with people on it.
    https://liftblog.com/2021/01/10/indi...wing-incident/

How is this not all over the news? The only 2 stories are a lift blog and unofficial networks linked to the lift blog.
This is the same kind of thing that happened at 49 degrees earlier this year. This lift used the same kind of pin that was missing in the 49 Degrees accident.

Missing is a bit of a misnomer. On those types of grips you mechanically un-twist the haul rope and insert a "clip" that the chair hangs from and then re-twist the haul-rope closed around the clip. Riblets are still in use all over the place and though it is kind of old tech. they are usually pretty reliable as long as they are well maintained.

I believe they’re saying that the cotter pin that holds the hanger to the clip was missing. So the clip stayed in the rope, and the chair just slid right off. Pretty sad that they missed a cotter pin, even if it wasn’t installed you would think you would notice on one of the daily chair inspections.

I just can't believe it would happen to that kind of connection twice in a mater of months, for an industry that's so regulated and litigious, that's almost unfathomable. Lawyers are just foaming at the mouth.

I still find it interesting that their is very little news about this as well. If that happened around here, they would have 2 or 3 new choppers flyin around the fucking place. I mean i know its the UP, not exactly crowded, but what else do they have to talk about up per.
