Posted this in the Internet Radio thread. Do a search for KMHD Jazz Radio. It is a community radio station out of Mount Hood Community Collage. Really good range of tunes. Wish I could get it in my truck. I have XM radio but I find the jazz options mostly meh, sort of like the jazz the airlines pipe in.

Went down the youtube hole tonight, starting with the Nubya Garcia Tiny Desk Home, then the Julian Lage Tiny Desk from the archives, which led me to this:



One of my favorite guitarists and this trio is incredible.

Julian Lage is such a monster player. He’s so good that it kinda freaks me out. Been lucky to see his trio play a few shows and it’s such a performance, seems like they switch it up to design different sets for different venues and settings. He is my favorite for now.

Somehow I missed this thread and am super glad I found it.

Long time saxophonist here. Majored in music in College and have been studying jazz ever since. Within the past 8 or so years, I have REALLY been digging into Ellington, especially the Blanton/ Webster band. So many monsters in that iteration of the Ellington group; Jimmy Blanton, Harry Carney, Sonny Greer, Otto Hardwick, Johnny Hodges, Ben Webster....

This recording is so tight. I could write an essay about everything from Ben Webster's solo to the crazy interplay in the reeds/ brass after the sax soli. This band swings so hard.

Also on my "must listen to" list is Sonny Side Up. Sonny Rollins, Dizzy, and Sonny Stitt. The Eternal Triangle has one of my favorite tenor battles of all time

One of the best live shows I ever saw was Bela Fleck, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Stanley Clarke at the Hampton Beach Casino. Despite the trash venue, those guys were amazing.

I've had a chance to briefly meet and talk to Victor and Bela on separate occasions. Both are very positive and down to earth guys. I've seen the Flecktones a few times prior to Coffin's departure to the DMB. If you listen to anything today, check out Howard Levy's intro to "Life In Eleven". You'll never think of the harmonica the same way again.

wow, that must have been cool. I have seen Stanley Clarke a few times, once or twice with Return to Forever and once or twice with his own band. Dude kills it on bass.

I was at that show. I like the casino for the two night Dark Star runs but not so much as a seated venue.

The first two times that I saw the flecktones were two shows in a row, one in San Diego and one in mammoth, with aquarium rescue unit as the opener. They were not well known and both were small shows. It was super fun to watch at both shows as the crowds built around Bela and Victor and jaws dropped as people started to realize what they were witnessing.

It was similar to seeing and observing the crowds watching pancho Sanchez at a club with a dance floor. After an extended Sanchez solo, you’d have to wipe the drool off the floor dripped by everybody on the dance floor that aspired to play congas.

In the mid/late 90’s, several of the UCSD music grad students would play a jazz show or two per year at one of the larger theatres. They often played sun ra “songs.” Super entertaining and interesting instrumentation.

I had exactly the same experience seeing the Flecktones at Bumbershoot many, many years ago. I think I just stood there with my mouth open for 45 minutes, trying to make sense of what I was hearing.

Sun Ra and his Arkestra played a show at my college and it was one of the most insane musical things I have ever experienced.

A bunch of my ultimate team was at the show, and the next day, powered by Sun Ra's extraterrestrial vibes, we won our first tournament.

One year at Regional's up at Williams we were on I think our 5th or 6th match during a complete downpour. To say we were spent would be polite. While the rich kids were holed up in their BMW's and Volvo's with their heat blasting, our whole team dropped acid and played the final match with no shirts and in our underwear.

We did not make it to Nationals, but we didn't feel cold anymore. Lot's of lay outs that went for yards through the mud. Good times.

We did win the party.

This weeks find is Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers with Thelonious Monk. This album swings so hard. Johnny Griffin on Tenor and Bill Hardman on Trumpet. Dig their solos on "Rhythm-a-ning" (as well as Monk's comping behind him)



When I list my favorite tenor players, I always neglect Griffin until I re-listen to some of the Jazz Messenger stuff as well as his recordings with Eddie Lockjaw Davis. Super lyric soloing and some really harmonically complex stuff. Enjoy

I poke around on ksl cause I like to change stuff up, but I have no reason whatsoever to change out these speakers. And they were a labor of love to get them in top shape. There is a set of jbl L5 out there right now though....
