We've been judging people in many areas over the years here at TRG.

Bwah. Now that would require a 3 finger pour.

Just catching up. Timber, JimmyC and Cruiser aren’t wrong. There’s so many easy ways to get affordable, but good looking clothes.

I haven’t had to wear a suit in years professionally, but I have a bunch of great suits from the Men’s Shop at J. Crew. They don’t have those stores everywhere but the Ludlow Suiting is Italian, very tailored and great fitting (tall/slim). It’s nearly time to break out the Japanese Chambray now that late summer is here.

    YMMV.

Except the store where a pair of pants comes from isn't indicative of whether those pants look good. At this moment, I'm wearing pants from Costco, a shirt from men's wearhouse, and a blazer, and I look good and professional; I could comfortably stand up in court with this outfit. Now, someone who cares whether my shoes are Italian loafers or just generic dress shoes might know my clothes aren't fancy or custom tailored, but there's no giant patch on my ass that says "Costco pants". They're just decent dressy pants.

Word. When it’s time to look good, look good. Just don’t mortgage the house to do it.

Also, never underestimate the power of showing up to an event which is a bit more rough and tumble in an old, quite nice sweater /shirt that has seen better days.

    Bingo re: Kennedy style.

It’s not about price or label. It’s about fitting well and being put together well.

If you can achieve both of those requirements at the least cost to you, then good on ya.

My experience is I have to rake through a ton of shit at those stores to find business casual that fits me. I just can't be bothered. I'm 6'2" and between L and XL in most off the shelf stuff. The L is often too short, and the XL stuff is too wide. I'd rather pay for custom stuff that fits than constantly fussing around trying stuff on and then ending up with ill fitting clothes. As far as dress shoes, we've been thru this before on the TGR: get a good pair in a classic style that can be resoled and wear the shit out of them. I've ordered a half dozen shirts and a few pants from Stantt from my local men's store and couldn't be happier. If I need more, I just call and order. For shirts, they have probably 50-75 swatches to choose from, and you can customize the buttons, cuffs and collar.

Ah, so the first question should be: do normal off the rack clothes normally fit? If yes, then the answer is different than if the answer is no.

For me, the answer is always yes, which makes clothes shopping easier.

Thought for sure Hickey had been offshored with all the buying and selling of the company but their wiki shows the Rochester factory is still going. Nice.

Lands End OCBDs used to be on par with Brooks at a fraction of the price. Haven't bought anything from them in a long time. Doesn't seem like anyone has bought from them in a long time.

Brooks suits were hit and miss for me including the Greenfield stuff before that relationship went South. Still wearing their chinos, though.

They're still made there and in Canada AFAIK.

I'm trying to buy USA/Can made stuff when possible, and instead of quantity, quality. I've spent more $ on cheap clothes that end up in the charity box than I care to recall.

Traditional dress shirts are sized all crazy. In what world is a guy with a 16" neck wearing a 32" sleeve? I'm more like 16 x 37 which is kinda difficult to find. I accumulated about a dozen of Neimans house label dress shirts over a couple years and now they're pretty much all I wear to work. They're 80s 2 ply cotton and available in a trim fit, wrinkle free fabric treatment, and 36/37 sleeve length in 16" neck.

It looks like Hickey and Samuelsohn are under the same ownership now. The Samuelsohn OTR suits I had were nice. Also made in Canada. Couldn't agree more re: production and quality.

Should be clear: that pic is from googlefu.

I don't hang on to catalogues any longer than a week or two into a season.

Absolutely. That's part of the second requirement.

Look, one time I showed up at the the Collins lift without Kinco's, a backpack and 120 waist skis. The looks of scorn practically burned a hole in me. Now when I visit UT I rent 120's and flop around like everyone else on the groomers hoping for a powder day.

    Random Unthreadworthy Questions

There was once a Buddhist master. He had studied for years at the foot of his teacher, finally achieved master status himself, and left and taught others. One day he came back to visit his past teacher. It was raining. He left his galoshes and umbrella on the porch when he went inside his older master’s home.

One inside inside the elder master greeted his visitor warmly, then posed to him a question. “On what side of your galoshes is your umbrella?” he asked.

The younger master considered for a minute, and then realized with a start that his learning was not yet complete. He disbanded his followers and learned at the foot of his old master for another 12 years.

In all things, be deliberate. This applies as equally to ski choice as it does to the clothes you choose to wear.

So much this. And some of those XL shirts are even too short in the sleeve. Damn fat north american sizing. Even with my middle not quite as trim as was in my 30's, I still can't fill out those XL widths. WTF?
