    Spoon making

Anyone in here carve spoons? Just started last night, basically out of boredom, but I think I might enjoy it. have to invest in at least a hook knife, but soon enough.
First attempt progress. Maybe 1.5hour? Pear wood.

I needed some disposable spoons for some yogurt I bought for breakfasts when I was in Spain. I bought a 10 pack of wooden ones for less than 1€.

Look at the Finnish ones for drinking from streams for some inspiration.

Honestly it seems like a great thing to do while on a conference call/meeting

I made these for my wife--for stirring french press and for mochas in a tall hydroflask. They're 11 inches long. (Honestly)

They're cherry. I didn't treat them with anything. I cut out the blanks on a band saw and carved the bowls with chisels and carving gouges. Might have rounded the handles and the back of the bowls with patternmakers rasps, can't remember. Might have used a spokeshave on the handles too. Lot of ways to carve a spoon.

This is all raw log. Cut down with hatched and mora knife and the rest whittled. I dont have any specialized tools yet, but if this turns out OK I might drop $50 on a small quality set.

Hmmm. Looks like it ought to be able to get a few ramen noodles to your mouth.

Before you know it you'll be knocking these things out and selling them to tourists.

Might as well go buy a new car.

Jk. Looks like a good way to pass the zoom meetings. Maybe we should have a competition between maggots of who can build the coolest thing in a single zoom meeting. Getting fired is disqualifying.Click image for larger version.

Cool idea on the meeting contest.

I will be buying some specialized tools. making the bowl with a normal mora is a pain, and quite frankly dangerous. Only a few drops of blood today. I hook knife is looking like a must. I foresee a few more soon different lengths and shapes. When practiced I bet I can do a couple a day, and i got tons of wood. Make good gifts and non stick safe.

Timely that you started this thread just after I read this article. "Beginners Guide to Spoon Making" I might try it camping next summer. Good tips on here, comments include where to buy the special tools.
