We have a 25 yo unvaccinated male in the icu. Healthy, mild asthma. He came in for Covid and developed Guillian-Barre syndrome. He’s past the isolation stage but we had to trach him and he got a peg tube because of his respiratory status and ongoing paralysis.

I wore a full N95 whenever I went on the master bedroom to take care of her. I also used the master bath.. sprayed lysol everywhere and only took off the N95 to take a quick shower or brush my teeth. Kept toothbrush in a zip lok bag.

Tested negative twice during wife's isolation period. After that took off the masks and got it 4-5 days later.. I was isolating at home for the additional 10 days already when that happened so definitely got it from her. Ya, 10 day isolation wasn't enough for us.. So, LOL!

Short answer, A good N95 mask is fine to co habitate in the main house as long as you sleep elsewhere, i.e. not in the same bedroom..
Well shit. This doesn’t leave me much hope for avoiding it if she is a carrier. We have both been masking thus far when around each other with N95’s. Fingers crossed she gets a couple negative tests and I get relax a little bit. I suppose I will keep isolated until we know more after her tests and then decide on a plan of attack if she tests positive and I don’t.

Omicron is spreading like wildfire in freedom land. Seems like every person I know has either tested positive or lives with someone who has. I know everyone keeps saying it’s a matter of when, not if, I just flat out don’t want to believe that. I am having a hard time seeing any other way this could shake out though with how people are behaving and how transmissible it is.

Anecdote warning, but relevant to the above discussion: this shit can come on quite some time after exposure, so please continue to be safe around others for some time even after you think you are out of the woods. I was exposed on Dec 18th. Neg PCR 3 days after and then negative 5 days after for all us who were exposed. Day 7 my youngest started to get symptoms. Negative PCR test that day as well. There was no school so we just let it ride, but 4 days later I get symptoms and then finally both myself and youngest daughter test positive. Wife then gets symptoms and tests positive days after us, and on and on it cascaded but missed my oldest delighter somehow.

Exact same scenario with my neighbors. Symptom on set was like 8 days from exposure and test only positive a few days into symptoms.

So I'm hoping that you folks truly did miss this thing, but stay vigilant for a bit. Not only is this variant very contagious, but I think the wonky incubation and shedding periods are leading to more exposures than necessary.

    Anecdotal, but interesting.

Had "real" covid back in October/November. Recovered, no lasting effects.

This past weekend I had a headache for a couple days and about half a day with a very, very mild fever - probably 99.5° and thought very little of it.

At-home test Monday morning, strong positive. Got a clinic appointment for a PCR test, which also came back positive. Presuming omicron, given protection from having had covid not very long ago. Currently have some sinus pressure and a runny nose, which does happen to me when the air quality gets bad here. Hard to say if it's environmental or illness without doing some actual testing.

My tentative, non-expert opinion is that an appreciable number people will shrug this off as a cold, both physically and with their conduct (testing, isolating, etc).

At this point, the experts are saying to assume that cold symptoms = Covid.

Could your youngest have started the whole chain in your family?

I believe so, but it was interesting how long it took to first manifest after exposure - and we know exactly who it came from and when. It was also interesting to me how long it took to cascade to each of us afterwards, as we were all around each other non-stop.

A reasonable recommendation for sure, but I'm not convinced it plays out that well in real life. In my case, I assumed my first day of headache was a hangover. I assumed my second day of headache was not being hydrated quite well enough. The last half of the third day I had that super mild fever, which is where I assumed I had a cold and figured I'd do a test in the morning. I felt fine Monday morning, and would have worked all day if I had tested negative.

Everyone has to make their own assumptions about how people will act, I just wanted to paint a picture of my experience as someone who is willing to get tested for cold symptoms.

That idiots will overlook efficacy and usefulness if someone else makes money on it. I'm deathly allergic to peanuts and it would be like me refusing epinephrine because the producers make a mint on it by saving lives. Its a red herring for people who want another reason to confirm their own bias.

The money big pharma makes on the drugs they pump into you in ICU is way more than what they make on a vax

That's because Omicron is very similar to the common cold

"Scientists have identified several coronaviruses that affect humans, including 229E, NL63, HKU1, and OC43, which cause mild to moderate upper respiratory symptoms that can include cough, fever, headache, runny nose, and sore throat. (While all are symptoms of a common cold, it may be interesting to know that the common colds can be caused by coronaviruses, rhinoviruses, and other types of viruses.)"

To Vaccinate or Not---The Rat Flu Odyssey Continues

Y’all might want to listen to that Michael Mina interview that I posted upthread, interviewed by Andy Slavitt on slavitt’s podcast, posted on Monday. Mina discussed how the different pcr tests and antigen tests are showing positive results relevant to when one becomes contagious, specific to current data and Omicron.

summary: with Omicron, some people will be (mildly) contagious before they test positive on any available test, and one may be contagious for several days before getting a positive result in a nasal swab rapid antigen test.

I accept that fear is how most people live thier lives and base most of their decisions on.

I don't see a lot of fearlessness out there.

If we(humanity) ever had to deal we something truly difficult most would fold like dollar general lawn chairs.

You do you. I'll do me. Word.

There is that fear allegation again. Which is ironically leveled by the same folks who are scared of cloth on their face and taking a teeny shot backed by years of research by people with far greater knowledge than themselves.

Risk mitigation is the phrase that I would use. Its why I carry an epipen. I'm not scared of peanuts, I deal with the consequences of exposure.

You look at something like unvaccinated rates in hospitals and it looks like many decisions are made on both fear (scared of scary needle) and stupidity (can't understand basic math, think that something with a low probability can't happen to them i.e. more math issues).

I listened to the interview and agree that the govt has shat the bed on testing and that companies that have increased prices 50% are profiteering.

Democracy is slow and the whole pandemic is a learning process. The only places that can snap their fingers and decree that everyone should have to do exactly what they think is right are authoritarian regimes, is that what the anti-vax want here as long as it is their way?

How is fear controlling everyone's life? People manage their risk doing hobbies like skiing, driving, navigating life with a mask in stores or not. Whether you have a higher tolerance of risk or not doesn't mean fear is controlling you.

    dude makes a shitty argument.

People point out it’s a shitty argument.

dude ironically “folds like dollar general lawn chair”

Cmon man - covid trolls in here usually go a few rounds at least defending their weak ass arguments before pivoting to tropes like “well you guys just live in fear then”
