By Oct. 24 entry will require people to be fully vaccinated at least seven days after receiving both doses.

Many countries are allow to ask for "papers" the USA decided they did not want to be one of those when we established.

I fully agree with you that people should not be "required" to get vaccinated, meaning that agents of the government cannot simply ask for your papers on the street.

But I'm also perfectly comfortable with the government mandating proof of vaccination for all sorts of things. Want to enter the country? Show your vax card. Want to fly on an airplane? Show your vax card. Want to enroll in any public school? Vax card.

The obvious goal is to create a situation where the incentives to get vaxxed are significant enough that everyone does it. But it would still technically be possible to (legally) forego those incentives and live life as a hermit. The real question is, how deep do those incentives need to run in order for the necessary percentage of the population to get vaxxed?

Individual rights have limitations, like it or not there is a social contract.

I don't like the ideas of a vax, mask or vax id either. But I'd prioritize voting rights, equal opportunity, better distribution of wealth and other commie ideas a lot higher.

Did customs in Peru or Ecuador actually check you for the Yellow Fever vaccine? Just a curiosity on my part. I've never visited a country that has a vaccine requirement (before Covid), so not sure what kinda documentation they need for it?

Where I live, there was a measles outbreak at an elementary school a few years ago with a school body that was roughly 75% vaxed, and there have been several pertussis outbreaks amongst unvaxed families. Each of these times, the County public health officers and schools have come down hard and clear in their isolation orders. There were no protests at the schools or the county buildings or anywhere. there was compliance and more people got vaxed. i know people in oregon that vaxed their older children for measles after that outbreak.

So the anti-vax educator I know has decided she's gonna get a medical exemption to the state's vax mandate - from her anti-vax naturopath.

in CA, people are chasing medical licenses for inappropriate authorization of medical exemptions. I know a naturopath in your area who has been very quiet on SM about covid.... like zero posts about it on their professional and personal sm accts....

I've agreed several times that it's a fucked potential infraction on civil liberties. Like I agree with you, even if I don't type in caps. (!)

But I think there's a lot more important stuff to worry about and I can see why, given the number of g00fballs on all sides of the political spectra that won't get vaxxed, why the vax id is being promoted.

I also agree with you that there doesn't need to be a federal mandate for vax cards. If you're not going to fly, leave the country, enroll in public schools, etc., then you could theoretically continue to live un-vaxxed and without a card.

But very few people would do that. And if you want to fly, enroll in school, etc., then you'll need to be vaxxed and need a vax card.

It's not a mandate. It's the government saying "you can do whatever you want, but if you want to partake in these various activities that the government is heavily involved in, you'll have to meet our conditions, one of which is being vaccinated."
