Why wouldn't they? If you are interested in sports that don't otherwise get a lot of exposure the Olympics are as important as they ever were.

Huh, thought they were going ahead with that. Tri-Cities cancelled the waterfolies (Hydro races) because they felt it was better for the health of the community. Shortly after they announced it Congressman Dan Newhouse put out a statement saying Inslee had cancelled the event <roll eyes>

I guess my thing is that the messaging needs to be stronger that if you are fully vaccinated, and hang out with the fully vaccinated then you can live a normal life. We're not going to convince the Trumpests to get vaccinated if there are no benefits (ya know besides not dying of a deadly disease.) People are terrible at accurately measuring risks. The sheer unlikelihood of getting hospitalized after getting vaccinated is not being widely reported. I was talking with a guy that's traveling this summer and was choosing to drive instead of fly because of COVID fears. But by driving a long distance (super dangerous) instead of flying (super safe) he's actually INCREASING his risk of serious injury or death.

The Biden Congress address IMO was a missed opportunity. He's fully vaxed. So is all of congress. Why not have a normal address to show America what a post vaccination future looks like? That or I guess we could just offer them all $500 or a box of ammo. That should get it done.

I just mentioned this in another thread, but I have a feeling the reason this message hasn't been articulated too much is because people will lie about being vaccinated. For example, you can't really start telling the general public it's now OK not to mask if you're vaccinated because suddenly everyone will be vaccinated...

Those people didn’t give a shit when the prior resident went maskless and almost died, it wouldn’t move the needle. $500 and they’d still be dumb cunts because the self destructive stupid is the point.

Circling back to the article you linked about my close neighbor Umatilla county (3 miles as the crow flies) where I go to get my horse feed and frequently report on the lack of face masks and SDing:

Pendleton, Oregon (CNN)This mountainous frontier city on the Columbia River plateau romanticizes the pioneer personality of the Old West and celebrates its rugged past with one of the world's oldest rodeos.

In rural Umatilla County, where Pendleton is located, locals take pride in the region's deep sense of freedom, toughness and self-reliance.

It's not entirely surprising then that residents are avoiding vaccination sites in droves, even as Oregon leads the nation in the rate of Covid-19 cases over the last two weeks and this remote northeastern county ranks at the bottom in vaccines administered per capita.

"It is still the frontier out in these hinterlands and there's certainly a sense of individualism," said Tracy Bosen, the vaccinated owner of Pendleton House Historic Inn and a proponent of the shot.

"As far as the political realm is concerned, Pendleton is known for being the wild, wild West. People don't like to be told what they have to do when we have our lives and our livelihoods and families to take care of."

Still, Umatilla County Public Health Director Joe Fiumara Jr. appeared somewhat at a loss to explain the vaccine hesitancy among the county's nearly 78,000 residents.

"I wish I had a concrete answer," he said. "A lot of people just think they're going to be OK. They're either young enough, they're healthy enough, or they stay away from the wrong people."

The reasons for the hesitancy vary, according to Fiumara, but mainly stem from distrust of the government on both ends of the political spectrum -- from conservative Republicans (more than 60 percent of county residents voted Republican) to migrant workers who might be undocumented.

"We've seen a polarization with this vaccine that I've not seen with other vaccines," he said.

Fiumara recalled a county health investigator recently asking a resident who had been infected with Covid-19 whether they had been vaccinated.

"And the response was they had not received the vaccination because doing so would have made them a Democrat," he said. "I'm really hoping that was said mostly in jest. But the main investigator really didn't think that it was."

oh, I was joking...or being sarcastic...or, well, not doing a very good job of it at the very least. I was just completely unshocked to see that information in the CNN article. The server they interview that uses the logic "my boyfriend and I are young so we're not getting it..." sums up a lot of what is wrong with the folks like her.

Ha, the Missoula Health Dept. is currently all over social media advertising they are at a brewery here giving J&J to anyone who will take it. Also right across the street from the homeless shelter, but I assume they've already canvassed the shit out of that.

"Young adult" = 16-25 year olds, IMO. Not that anyone asked, but I also don't recall needing permission to post, so I'm going to.
