my son just informed me his new Bronson is under a recall the CPSC issued today

Thanks for the heads up. Here are the years and models of ALUMINUM FRAMES listed in the recall.

“This recall involves the model year 2020 aluminum frames on Santa Cruz models Nomad 4a Aluminum, Bronson 3a Aluminum and the 5010 3a Aluminum and Juliana models Roubion 3a Aluminum and Furtado 3a Aluminum.”

Previous unsold frames were sent to a third party painter, who was to strip the old paint, and paint them the "new 2020 season colors".
The paint shop used a heat process to strip the frames that may compromise the integrity of the frame.
Oops, guess that old trick is out in the open...

It seems crazy to me that this is easier/more profitable then just discounting last year's colors a few bucks.

Could have been at least as concerned about cannibalizing 2020 model sales and eroding revenue position on the actual new bikes ... ironically if they only knew that COVID was coming and people would have been willing to show up in droves to pay full price for last years colors lol.

This practice has been going on for a long time, within many different brands, Not just a 2020 carryover thing.
This time they just ran into a vendor who was also trying to increase revenue and save a few dollars by making the stripping process “easier”.
Sounds like Santa Cruz will test the frames by using an electro current conductivity test to see if there is thermal damage to the frames original heat treating process.
They are only trying to track down less than 300 frames, but need to recall every single frame in that model/series. The number of frames recalled is unknown because Santa Cruz won’t share those sales numbers because they consider that proprietary information that would give their competitor an advantage.

The number of frames recalled is in the CPSC notice (about 3000) ... do you mean the number of frames suspected in the poor process batch?

I no longer have materials science friends living / working down the hall - but I’ll be damned, that’s awesome that electrical properties of different heat treat effects can be easily measured (I assume it also means they’ll have to strip the frames again, but at that point can apply 2022 paint schemes lol). the boys at the shop like Owen even though he's a few years younger than them - at 14 he's hanging tough with the 18 year old bike shop rats, and they take care of him - they told us that Santa Cruz is pretty much just replacing the frames and that they'd have him on something new as soon as they could - being a good dad I asked them to inquire about an upgrade to a carbon frame - I will kick down if the price is right - the carbon frame was not available in his size when we bought it
