One more question: Am I going in the right direction for a five year old getting a 1/10th scale crawler. Would either a different style vehicle or 1/24 mini be better (the latter being mostly due to indoor use potential)?

I think so, that's what worked for us. We have a couple of 1/24th scale trucks too, and yes, they're mostly for indoor use. I couldn't imagine taking them anywhere too far. We don't typically use the 1/10th scale trucks indoors, mostly because they're a bit dusty and dirty.

Ollyball. Indoor ball that you can color. Great for rainy days and blasting unsuspecting kids in the face.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

    Excellent.

Update on the slc rc park. We were out there today, removed some rocks from an area of dirt that has had a disc run through it. Build a big triple jump out of an existing dirt pile. Had fun launching and breaking trucks. Mojave came out unscathed, kraton busted a shock and popped a driveshaft.
Then, we marked out a 250ft x 250ft area that will become the bashing area. Gonna pressure the city guy we are working with to get the big disk out there to break up the bash area. Then, shovels and rakes and wheelbarrows and volunteers. Gonna be a ton of work. But progress. As for a rock crawling area, eventually we will begin to accumulate rocks in a particular area, and that will eventually become a rock crawling park. There is no shortage of rocks.

I was out with the Redcat scout and shredder today. My 8 year old really likes the fast shredder over the rock crawler. It’s too bad, since every time we use it it’s down for a while while we wait for replacement parts

I ended up pulling the trigger on the Danchee Ridgerock. I was tempted to spend more for the Everest 10, but 1. I want to see if my son actually plays with an RC truck, 2. I watched multiple Youtube videos where people seemed to really like the Ridgerock and it's 4 wheel steering, esp. for beginners. You can buy all the parts off Redcat Racing's site for both, so that wasn't an issue.

Now I hope he likes it, because what I think are really cool are the scale trucks, and if we get into it, I can justify buying one. Thanks for all the advice (even if I didn't take all of it)!

Arrma Kraton or mojave will take care of the issues with the shredder. Though my kid did finally damage his kraton. Bent a shot tower trying to pull off a flip on a big jump. Granted he tried lime 20 times. And it does still work ok, just has a bent part.
I ready think arrma has hit the sweet spot with their 6s cars in terms of value, durability and performance. Yes they are a bit more expensive, but man are they durable. And you can run them on 4s just fine, and even back off max speed with the remote until skill catches up to truck capability.

Rallyin in the desert. Good times. Natural drops, good rock crawling, fast smooth dirt.

Put some new foams in the Cherokee. I guess I hadn't realized how much weight the new hardbody added to that frame. Followed it up with a little backyard rip around the fire pit. Spring is here.

The Ridgerock I ordered for my son arrived and I played with it in the house tonight to "test it out to make sure everything works." It seems like it will be a lot of fun and the four wheel steering let's it turn in really tight areas. I think he'll really enjoy it and I'm already considering getting my own truck if he does.
