Alright, I'm going to talk with the boy and see if he's interested in the rc crawler hobby. Now that I have a bench to work from it could be some good tinkering fun.

Where do I start and not break the bank until I know he's into for long haul?

If you are in salt lake, you are welcome to come have a peek at our track and how the cars go there. We also drive up at I street jumps quite a bit. It's a whole different ball game than it was 30 years ago.
But I'm not really in the crawler game. I do need one though. Just sold a preamp yesterday for a few bills so maybe I should see what west valley hobbies has in that price range.

Thanks for the invite. If I had something worth running, I might take you up on your offer. I think the crawlers would be boring as fuck @ I street. The singletrack above Red Butte though.......

In other news I got the 1080 ESC and a new Holmes Crawlmaster installed this morning. The bearings were toast in the OEM motor. I tried resurrecting them last week, but I think they were too far gone. I'm really impressed with the control of the new motor and ESC. Hopefully I didn't lose too much on the top end.

I also snuck a ESS +1 Dual speaker system in. It replicates engine sounds that work in sync with the actual throttle. It's pretty cool, the boy was shitting himself. I'll probably map my unused channel 3 to the horn, you know, just to piss off the hikers.

Haha, that's awesome with the speaker.

I modded my mojave today with some larger tires.

    It ROMPS.

I had to trim the fenders quite a bit, but I didn't have to lift the body, which for this car you don't really want to do anyway as the body roll cage interfaces with a center body support. Also, ii like the look of the lower body. I had to regear, down to a 13t pinion from 16.
This car uses the same drivetrain as a number of different cars including ones running tires larger than this, so, drivetrain can handle it. So far...

When the big one gets bigger tires, then the little one gets bigger tires... From the big one...
Only mild trimming in this case.
Found this old yellow and blue body that had been semi retired. The fox one is barely in one piece.Click image for larger version.

Good god that looks good, but let's be honest, everything looks better with properly sized rolling stock.

Took the Redcats out for a cruise today. I still can't believe we're rolling on dirt in mid Noveburary.

I thought the boy was gonna be pissed that I replaced his motor for one with a few less turns, not sure he even noticed. Winning.

Because we drive rc cars every goddamn day! Just about. But we are developing a dust problem. You could probably see our dust cloud from olympus cove tonight... Open to suggestions... Like where's the goddamn snow?

The boys birthday is in a couple of weeks. Pretty sure he's gonna shit his pants.

This thing is fucking absurd. It'll pretty much fly and land itself. I think it'll be a great trainer.

I got it slapped together in a half hour or so. I'm just waiting on the optional GPS sensor to arrive, hopefully that will make it kid-proof.

I tried a GoPro mount on one of the crawlers, but just for stills. I do video all day at work, and the last thing I want to do at the end of the day is deal with that. I still need to work on the angle a bit.

Good god, that looks like fun.

Got the crawlers all good and wet before the game yesterday.

Took the Cub for a spin too. FFS, my sphincter is still up around my throat. I thought that thing was gonna be a blast. Between the fact that before takeoff I was a few whiskeys deep and had neglected to read the manual things went OK.... until I needed to land and couldn't figure out the GPS system.... and the neighbor kid wanted to show me his sweet bike skills.... and someone wanted to learn how to drive stick in his '88 Corrola in my LZ.... and another couple needed to try out their new direct to consumer Chinese touring bikes. FML.

I blew up the motor in my mojave today. Hopefully just a bearing replacement will do the trick.

So, uh, do you hear that salt lake city has set aside land for a big rc car park? Gonna be hudge! Full 1/8 scale racetrack with drivers stand. 200'x200' bashing area, a rock crawler area. All out by the existing rc plane airport. I'm working on the design side of the bashing area... Dirt moving has already begun...

I had heard rumors of it for years. Never thought the city would get their shit together. It'll be nice to hang out with folks of a similar persuasion when this covid shit is all over.
