During the summer when there was no travel restriction, victim blaming:

British Columbia Premier John Horgan says drivers who have out-of-province licence plates on their vehicles should consider taking public transit or riding a bicycle if they're feeling harassed by people.
Horgan also suggested on Monday that drivers change to B.C. plates to avoid trouble from residents who are concerned about the spread of COVID-19.
"I would suggest, perhaps, public transit," he said at a news conference. "I would suggest that they get their plates changed. I would suggest they ride a bike."

My real life personna isn't angry, but I feel like holiday crowds at Fernie may have changed that! In all seriousness not trying to come off like an ass, but the whole "douche plate" thing is comical in normal times but has become downright frustrating during COVID when there are no innocent actors from what I can tell. We'll have to bury the hatchet over a tailgate steak and wine sesh when health orders permit. Enjoy the ski!

So, the government does ask people to self isolate if you've had close contact, that's what happened to me. I was asymptomatic. Because of the nature of my job I wanted to know if I was positive or negative, as a base line, since I had been living with someone what was unaware that they had covid for a number of weeks. As a health care provider I can work even in quarantine so long as I am asymptomatic I am good to go. I knew they wouldn't test me so I lied and told them I had symptoms and got tested. Here is the rub. The PHSA will test anyone with symptoms. If you are in quarantine and you develop symptoms you can go and get tested. They will not test you if you do not have symptoms because you could get tested one day and be negative and the next day you could have an onset of symptoms.

Yah, I totally get it. There are people in the valley and in BC that get worked up over red plates. Fuck em.

At the same time, there are quite a few in the valley that use red plates with PO boxes or addresses in Alberta due to our incredibly expensive insurance rates. Not to mention the many, many hundreds of houses/condo's etc that are owned by people from all over Canada, but predominately Albertans who roll in on days off.

I'd certainly feel safer coming to an area that has a lower rate of Covid cases then staying in an area with higher numbers. I'm lucky that I am living in that area and that there is skiing.

There are certainly more cars from AB,SK,ON,QC than I would normally see mid week at the hill. Numbers are most certainly up. Doesn't bother me personally. Just do what we are asked to do by our elected officials and the medical professionals that they/we are trusting and relying on.

There are people I know personally who bitch about Albertans who originally came from AB and made the move to Fernie. Last time I checked we are Canadian and the CDN government and provincial governments (aside from the Atlantic bubble) has not blocked borders.

People are stressed out, if skiing and MTB brings solace, then I am all for it. This is not new, this summer was the busiest ever on the trail networks in the valley for MTB's.

Fuck the people who make judgements about plates, they have no idea what and or why someone is in BC. I doubt your vehicle would ever be vandalized and i further doubt anyone would even look sideways at you with whatever plate you have on your vehicle and if they do, pay no mind. We also don't know their motivations....

Maybe we should remind ourselves of what Dr Bonnie Henry has been saying, what is it? "Be calm, be kind, be safe."

I am down with a tailgate sesh. You wear a mask I wear a mask and we social distance. All this is, is an inconvenience. Seriously though, this is fascinating, we are living through a world wide pandemic...

They'll test anyone that walks in the door here in BC. Or drives or rides, they had a temp outdoor drive through testing here in North Van and me and the kiddo rode there on our cargo bike. I've been tested three times. Spouse tested three times, our 3yr tested once, and our 5yr old tested twice. If you have any minor claimed symptom they'll test you.

The household self isolation is basically an assumed positive test. If my spouse tested positive we'd naturally assume we're all positive and isolate, common sense really.

The only people that are finding loop holes in the recommendations are the people looking to no follow them. Don't travel outside your community for no essential travel. It's pretty simple really. Calgary to Banff/Fernie/Golden isn't your community and skiing isn't essential. Vancouver to Whistler isn't your community and skiing isn't essential. Sucks if you live somewhere where you can't do what you love to do. We live in North Van and happy we have the Cypress passes and these days we're just doing a couple laps with the kids anyway. Following the recommendations and not going to Whistler, hopeful that come spring the recommendation might drop and we'll get to use our Whistler edge card days. If the recommendation stays in place we'll have to make the decision to dis-regard it or watch our edge cards days go up in smoke as Vail ain't going to refund them for us actually following the recommendation.

The fucked thing is, there is just so many more people around now. There is always a percentage of the population that just don't give a fuck about anyone else, but most people usually get the hint and do the right thing eventually. It helps when your neighbour is also doing the right thing.
In my youth of the 70's, there was just over 2mm people in the province. Lots of space between us especially 30min outside of most city cores. Same percentage of assholes, but they were just not as visible. Now there is over 4.7mm people in the province. Same percentage of true assholes, but mostly crammed into the same city spaces, and the southern half of the province, and their actions are easily seen by everyone else. Add social media and the like. It is just harder and harder for people to do the right thing if buddy next door is flaunting his opporunity to be a dick, and appearing to benefit by it. FOMO culture. It's who we've become. And it's going to get worse over time, unless we drastically change our culture - which is very unlikely without some major global upheaval (and COVID-19, for all its nastiness, hasn't been it).
Stay well people, and try not let the actions of a few dictate the selfish response of the many.

This . Its pretty clear that the vast majority ( from polls) of people are at least bending the rules and have been bending more and more as time passes. People who fixate on one particular type of bending are just fixating on that type because that is the bending that they do not do, as they would not benefit from it. Its just enlightened self interest.

Of course locals are not strictly going up in household cohorts. Just think if they did ski only in household cohorts? The lines would be way longer. When we go up in a mixed group we open the front windows that turbos the air change rate and keep the masks on. Certainly when I see a group of 5 15 year olds I don't think " poor Mom having 5 kids the same age" . Same as when I see 4 dudes come out of AB plated veh, I don't think that these 4 dudes who drove 3 hours together live together. I just hope that in other parts of their lives they are bending less rules.

About 1/2 the plates in the parking lot are red plates. Are all of those veh transporting household cohorts only? No of course not. Hopefully a lot are and while they are here they are going things not to leave covid in Golden or taking anything back.

I see the same at Whistler in the lift lines -- groups of 4 young men skiing/boarding together. Certainly locals from the conversation. Do they live together? Probably not. But they're comfortable being together, wearing face coverings and maintaining their distance from other people in line. It doesn't bother me at all. As long as I'm maintaining a little distance and wearing a mask in public I'm doing 99.9% of what's needed.

Perfect summation! Can't wait for the day when we can all go back to living our lives not caring, being bothered by, and put at risk by other people's actions, but until then...

She also said back in May masks do not protect you but now it's mandatory??? I have zero confidence in her or our governments.

If they really want to limit travel, maybe instead of a border ban, the province should address room rentals... either banning them or limiting them... I don't know.

Earlier today I got invited by a friend to go to revy for a weekend where they have rented a 1200 square foot place and 8 dudes will be in there. I told him I don't think it's appropriate and I'm out. But bigger picture, there have to be very few home groups of 8 people to justify such a rental.

I would have considered it if there were fewer people and all had their own rooms... but not like that.

This statement is confusing, If they actually work it should not go both ways?
A covid particle is less and 6micron? If you see can see your breath through your mask do you not think there is covid in it?

I have no knowledge of the particle size, but yes, if all health professionals say it helps than I believe them.

I can't imagine why they would be telling us to wear them as an elaborate practical joke.

Edit to add: don't quote me on the exact numbers but friends of my wife have some knowledge on the subject and the numbers they have go something like...

If 1 person wears a mask it's 60% effective and if both people are wearing a mask it's 90% effective.

The point is that it stops a lot (not all) of the particles from me travelling to you. And not all masks are created equal. There was discussion in another thread on a slightly subjective test that you try to blow a candle out through your mask and if it's easy to do you don't have a good mask. Yes I know this is not very quantitative but I get the point.

Not all health care professionals are saying this. Many don't believe it but can't speak out or they risk losing their licenses. This is the real issue, there is no ability to debate or question the issue.

Health care professionals are not materials engineers or ohs specialists. To be effective masks need to fit properly and be of the correct media type. A buff or home made mask is just a token safety measure imo. I've been through so much workplace training for h2s, confined rescue and workplace ppe over the years the mask thing drives me crazy.

Just saw on my news feed 26 flights into and from BC had covid risks involved. Worried about people driving to the ski hill and skiing? How about sitting in and incubater for hours.

I believe one of the Revelstoke outbreaks was due to local staff travelling to Lake Louise and bringing it back but the Mayor wants to stop tourists and wants government subsidies? Idiot.

^^^ I agree with everything you've said here... but I also don't think it hurts to wear one. And it's also why we are told to still distance even with a mask on... which a lot of people don't bother doing once the mask is on.

I'll add that I'd guess that most health professionals think they work or someone speaking out against them wouldn't have the reptocutions you're talking about.

Honestly, for me willingness to wear a mask is beneficial even if all it does is signal to me that you're aware of the pandemic and you're doing what you can. It more accurately, if you can't be bothered to do that one small inconvenience, what else aren't you doing that I should be concerned about.

I.e. this friend that invited me to revy... I don't think he gets and and I'm no longer sure I want to even do a day trip with him locally if he's demonstrated that he won't follow the rules.

No , well maybe a bit. I don't know. I think that in a gondi having the front windows open would be much more effective than masking , good , bad or indifferent.

at the time there may not have been masks but there are lots of masks now

I can grab a mask at the entrance of most retail stores and they are 8$ for a pack of 5 at safeway on a rack in the checkout line

Your posts show a complete lack of understanding of how the virus spreads and what masks do to stem that tide. I find it hard to believe people with your dumb ideas still exist this far into the pandemic. You should probably donate all your money to bitchute lol. Great source of information.

We're still debating the efficacy of masks? We're soo fucked
    Its a barrier/
How much of a barrier might be debatable. Obviously it will have more of an effect buy having the person blowing chunks of rona wear one than wear one to protect yourself from ingesting said chunks but its still a barrier if it covers some of the space of your ingesting holes
