Mammoth sucks, it's over crowded, no parking, and the beer is warm..

Had a great time skiing Wed-Thurs during the mid-week holiday period. The only lift lines I hit were on 9, and those never lasted very long. Avoided crowed chairs 1 and 2 for the most part. Only went to the top once.

Great upslope wind buff on Wed on 9 and 23, and downslope on Thurs. 25 was ski on to the lift all day, nice springy snow on the east side in the morning. Cornice bowl was were it was at Wed and Thurs, proper wind buff top to bottom if you avoided the windfucked sections.

Skied June Tues afternoon, hoping for good conditions on the lower mountain, but the snow never really softened. Lots of windboard, breakable crust, but kinda soft turns in the sidecountry ptich lookers left of J1.

Mammoth does not suck but all the people that roll in for Friday thru Sunday sure make it a gong show. Throw in Covid chair lifts and it is a genuine cluster fuck. I have not skied a Friday at Mammoth in a few years, now I remember why not. June tomorrow for sure. O and my new MX84's railed the hard pack. Those skis are sic.

Fridays are the new Saturday. I was told that it's due to a three night minimum at many places if you book over the weekend, hence Thursday, Friday, & Saturday nights are booked. On the plus side Sundays, especially after 12:00 pm are not a bad day to ski.

Yup, that is why the preferred MO is Sunday thru Thursday but Covid has fucked up my ski club lodging, so I joined the Thursday thru Sunday crew. Nice people but not the best days to be here.

We skied June today. Was going to go out for an hour at Mammoth early, but heard the wind and sipped my coffee. Checked out at 10:15 and drove up to June. Parked in the third row at 11 or so. Never even had to queue for a line on an lift. Rode J1, J6, J4, and mostly J7. Snow was in good shape on the groomers and on the bumps of J7. Best snow was left side of Sunset with nice wind buff until he pitch moderates. The bumps in the middles were pretty nice as well with soft troughs. My kid wanted to ski the trees, so I followed him. Mixed bag, but better than I expected. He also wanted to ski a double black down so we skied Gull Canyon. Had soft wintery snow on left side that skied decently for the first third. By half way down, conditions became interesting. He thought the entire run was pretty fun. I was just impressed at what he considered fun.

This is our second year coming over for ski week and we've skied June both Fridays and it is exactly what I would do if we come back again. Even better, is that when we split at 2:45, it took two minutes to pull out of the lot and get on the rode and we were already 30 minutes north.

For sure the ikon pass increases visitors. I bought an MVP pass one spring and skied with it that spring and the net spring. I never got over there in winter that year, and was getting more into touring, and decided not to renew. Only reason I've gone over the past two winters with my family is because of the ikon pass. I actually don't really like to ski AM/Squaw in the winter as I do not like 80, or the crowds there. To us, Mammoth seems way less crowded than Squaw. My wife is a teacher, so we've skied this week at other resorts. We've learned the best places to go were the ones that were not near big cities or airports. Mammoth fits that description, and we skied four days during a holiday week and barely waited in any lines.

If you need sleeper mid week day, buy a KW pass.

I think sleeper pow days are a thing of the past for many reasons beyond the multi pass.

Fun week. And a gorgeous drive north today.

June was the call this morning. Lots of wind buff blown around after the 1" over night. My best day in 3. Ran into Hutash on the lift. Small World.

Marketing Dept at Mammoth needs a kick to the baby maker. All the cams are locked so you can't pivot to see lift lines. You sneaky cunts.

    Hopefully this works.

    It did.

That's just a little video of one of my Paranoids lap on 2-14. It was P1, and it was fun.

Here is one from the next day, 2/15, when it was socked in. This one is Avi 2, with some new snow blowing in from the new storm.

Same at all the Tahoe areas. All I really want to know is how big the lift lines are so I'll know if it worth it for me to head up for a few runs. Must be fear of photographic evidence of non social distancing in lines or some bull shit.

    So god damn annoying.

You can see gondi 1 and chair 1 if you scroll down from the "unbound main park" and click on Broadway. That's it though. The cunts.

Pro Tip: If you download the Ikon App, they list the wait times there

Thanks, I'm downloading it right now and skiing Alpine tomorrow, then Mammoth the rest of the week. I'll compare app times to real life times.

Interesting. I downloaded the mammoth app and it did not show wait times.

Squaw/AM app does show wait times. It seems sort of accurate when we were there.

Yesterday & Today were fab...yesterday was wind buff city: face of 5, Drop Outs (1 & 3), west bowl, ...
Today...springlike..CH9 side corn and basically soft conditions all around.
Lines outside the typical choke points were fine.
Mr/Mrs Comish out crushing it as usual...great seeing u guys.

The accuracy of the wait times on the squawlpine app is highly questionable. I rarely bother to look. I’ll be at Alpine tomorrow if you want to make some turns. Maroon jacket, orange pants, bright green helmet (yeah, I’m pretty easy to spot!)
I ski 135 degree chutes switch to the road.

I treat the times at Squalpine as follows:
    0-5min: Good
5-10: Probably to the end of the corrals at alpine but not horrible
    10+: Avoid

They're certainly not "accurate" per-say, but better than nothing. Generally consistent for line length vs reported time, even if the time itself is off.

Sounds good. Light gray North Face jacket, brown Fly Lo pants, da kine beanie (no helmet Monday).

Rode all week. Not too crowded for ski week once you get off the bottom. I’m missing the stay at home order days . Wednesday was actually busier than Friday this week. The wind machine was in full effect starting Friday. Saturday was June per the usual. It was empty and a blast. Now how about another storm

The Wednesday crowds seemed like it was mostly a result of G2 closing and a bunch of folks suddenly heading to 1,3,5 as a result. It was not too bad before that happened and we just split and played in 12,13,14 until 2pm and then worked our way back.

I lapped chair 5 for 6 runs that day from 3:15 to close. No line at all.

But yeah, Wednesday seemed like the busiest day of the week. Thursday was significantly less crowded.

We are in the Friday at June crew and drive home from there. Left at 2:30 and was home before 9:30. And that included sitting in an In and Out line.

Great day of skiing on Tuesday as snow conditions, crowds, and weather all cooperated for some stellar skiing.

Tuesday started off with a few clouds that were gone by noon, but a strong ENE wind that was 70 mph at 8:30 am kept the Gondola 2 from running until noon.

The superpipe is up and running and I did a few laps thru it. The level of talent in it somedays is intimidating, but today is was empty for the most part.

If you ski the Avi chutes, don't fall. Watched this guy in the red lose a ski way up in Avi 2 and slide down thru the choke and into the small trees below it. Scary. He was unhurt, but shaken. Here is someone bringing his ski to him.
