The winter of 02/03 was my last full Tahoe season, I got injured in January the next year. 02/03 started out great, there was a solid base by the end of December. Then January sucked. No worries, that happens. Then February sucked. Then March sucked. At that point we were just accepting of things. It looked like Squaw might not make it through April. Then, from April 1 to around May 15 Squaw got something like 150 inches of snow. It was insane, and the best month and a half of skiing of my life. I believe Kirkwood closed in mid-April that year, right as it was absolutely pounding.

But they finally explained what kind of riding was happening in those ranches. Oh!!!

It's pretty funny when you realize what is going on!

I think the first time I made that drive I saw one or two and didn't put two and two together. Then I saw one with a woman on the sign, and I realized what was going on.

My guess is that the ones in Carson City or Reno are at least somewhat off the beaten path. I never saw any in my years living in Tahoe or driving that route. But the 95 is incredibly remote. There really won't be too many people driving that route who have to explain to their kids what the sign means, so I don't think they have to be as discreet in that area. Of course, it has been so many years since I drove that route that things could have changed. Regulations might have been put in place, the signs might need to be discreet now. I could certainly understand why an area might not want to have signs like that right on the road. My vegas trips are now from socal, so I either fly or drive the 15, I have not been to the 95 desert area in a long time.

Mountain skied really well today. It was a bit firm wary but Coyote was perfect at 8am. Cornice was good by 8:30. Went and grabbed my kid and we hit it again around 9:15. By then most groomed runs were soft. By noon off piste was good to go across the hill. May e a bit earlier in spots. Winds and cool air kept it from ever getting too soggy. Tho we last went by the Mill around noon. Otherwise it was in prime shape for closing. Got on of the last chains up and might have been the last down Scotty’s and even at 2:15 St Anton was good to the bottom. Salt is good.

Mill area looks thin. Everywhere looks thin. They are kicking ass keeping this place going to Memorial Day.

Brothels have only ever been allowed in rural counties. That's why they're all gathered in moundhouse on the carson city county line. I doubt Lyon County would qualify today

    That makes sense.

I should add that in my recollection the places were at least a bit of a distance from vegas, although I don't remember just how far. But the areas where I saw them were extremely remote. That 95 zone is seriously empty.

My guess is that the places I saw were in Nye County, or maybe Mineral or Esmerelda? I remember them being in the middle of nowhere.

Surprisingly good today. After .8mm of fresh and 23F at the top this morning, I was hopeful with some morning sunshine. Parked at the Mill and skied one run back to the Inn to get my kid. If was firm. By 9AM it was really quite fun and softening in different places. A lot faster and less slushy than typical spring. Sun is out now and top is 29F. Scotty’s was pretty perfect. Could maybe soften a touch more at the top but the bottom third is great.

This place is burnt out and they are doing a lot of work to keep it connected.

They are moving snow over by 5 and 10, so not sure what their plan is. There is really no snow at the Mill, so maybe push it down hill and keep that side going.

For those who don't know. In Nevada. In a county you can have one or the other. Gambling or prostitution. Obviously the lines are kinda blurred. But that's how it works. Carson City being a good example. Town has casinos. Drive out hwy 50. And there be cat house's right on the county line. It's very obvious around Vegas "Nye county". Casino's. All counties to the north no casino's but creepy who're houses

    No.

Brothels are illegal in counties with a population greater than a certain limit (IIRC 100,000) - in other words, rural counties. Local government may choose to ban brothels even if otherwise permissible under the population limit.

There is no link or restriction between counties allowing gambling vs allowing brothels. Nye County (Pahrump, just north of the Clark County line) has both.

^this. similarly lyon county (moundhouse ranches) has many casinos in silver springs, yerington, fernley, etc. That's why I said Lyon Co wouldn't qualify today as it's been one of the fastest growing areas in the nation for quite a bit.

originally (1971) it was 200k but was later raised to 700k. Lyon county is quite safe

There was at least .8mm fresh Sunday morning. Actually was enough to give the top some wintery feel. Saddle Bowl skied like a midwinter groomer until about noon. Which was cool.

Here is Climax from Saturday for sense of coverage

Skyline was burnt out so Road Runner was the only way toward a Scotty’s. My kid thought it was super fun. Just perfect for straight lining.

Our spring lunch spot is burning out. Top of Coyote was a double Diamond entrance with the thin cover. Bet it is burnt out completely the next warm day.

Hill is skiing really well considering the thin cover. They still are keeping Stump running which is pretty damn cool as the bottom 100 feet is completely burned out and just the cat tracks they are building keeping it going.

Andy’s Double Gold was perfect spring corn yesterday morning. They future olympians barely made any turns down it. Another example of Mammoth working to keep it going as there is a 15’ cat bridge at the top to span the distance over the burned out ridge.

We left at 1:30 yesterday but the snow was prefect at the top. A bit thicker below mid station, but still plenty fun.

    Nice shots Ott!

It has definitely thinned in the two weeks since I returned from my last trip. They are doing a good job of keeping it going, especially considering they got roughly 30% less snow than an average year.

It would be kind of nice to get one more trip, but that won't happen. Our lease is officially done on May 20, and I am too busy to pull a mid-week run up there. I'm not that bummed to be honest. My last trip I had accepted that this was it, and south swell season is here! If only the winds would cooperate a bit.....The last couple few evenings I have gone to bed with green 'fair' or 'fair to good' forecasts for north Orange County, only to wake up to more wind than expected. I should have a window tomorrow, but if it is as bumpy as today it won't be worth it. South OC was clean this morning, but I couldn't take the time for a Trestles run.

Well, I had an appointment that got postponed, so we decided to have one more trip to Mammoth this weekend. We'll see how the snow is holding up.

I'm excited to go play in the corn and slush (and dirt, hidden rocks, and bushes poking through the snow) for a couple more days!

You might oughta wanna check the weather report, cuz It's supposed to be windejo and stormy (rain and snow) F/S with overnight temps in the low 20s...so I wouldn't count on slush or corn...

Mammoth 11'053'. Get high not covid 20/21

Thanks for the reminder! I just checked and we may get very lucky, OpenSnow is saying right now that there's a chance for 6 inches of snow.

I hope so, because otherwise with windy, overcast days and temperatures barely above freezing during the day, it could get interesting. On the other hand, we could have rain with temperatures barely above freezing. Ugh...
