The markings on the stem will tell you a lot about boletus. Dots means suillus, scabers mean leccinium and reticulation means boletus or tylopilus. Originally Posted by BCMtnHound

I use a standard setup. A 5 gal. food storage bucket drilled out and with all the little plastic burrs and pigtails removed and sanded down ( that's the tedious part). Handle removed and replaced with rope which is for comfort and to make it easy to attach to my day pack. Shock cord hinge and hook latch on the lid.

Sulphur shelfs are an "eat with caution" genus. The classic chicken of the woods growing on midwestern hardwoods, laetiporus sulphureus, is the most desirable. There are some look alikes, however, that grow on conifer and eucalyptus that are implicated in a variety of reactions. Harry, I see pine needles around the base of that tree so I am assuming your find is the great lakes area conifer growing species, laetiporus huroniensis. It's usually listed as an eat with caution species. Start with small amounts trimmed from the edge of small specimens. Originally Posted by Harry

The local porcini. Not really 100% on exact species but I'm 99% sure this is boletus rubriceps. The caps are rarely as reddish as the classic rubriceps so well known from Colorado but everything else is a match. Exclusive mycorrhizal with spruce.
Only 40 hours after the rainstorm that triggered emergence. Probably weigh about a pound each. Maybe half a pound if you subtract all the maggots. Low elevation porcini, the most frustrating mushroom of them all. If its a large patch, the inevitable fungus gnats always ruin 80-90% of the crop before it even breaks the surface.

A russala of some sort. Huge genus with some choice species and a lot of "don't eats". We get one of the best, shrimp russula, around here but I don't mess with them. Originally Posted by Harry

FYI, harry, that fungus kills your trees. It causes brown wood rot. If you aren't going to eat it, then you certainly don't want it spreading around.

I actually just spoke to an arborist friend who is certified in tree risk assessment - he says it's a bit more complicated than that - oaks are fine, but conifers and other hardwoods can be destabilized by sulphur shelf, causing them to topple over while still being alive (full, healthy canopies). Re: their edibility - if I understand correctly, sulphur shelf can cause GI issues for SOME people when grown on SOME trees, so it's not like a "idk you might die but good luck" situation, more of a "some people get upset tummies". As always, thoroughly cook any mushroom you harvest, start small, and save some in the event you have an emergency and need to take some to the ER.

Shroom season is popping off in the Wasatch. Tons of false clubs this year! Quite a few sarcodon, some green russula, some lactarius and pine mushroom too.
Oh and I can definitely use an ID on this guy. Found under conifers. Who is it?
