Santiam Wagon Road goes down to BBR as well. Quite rideable other than winter snow

More trivia, the ODOT station at the Santiam Jct is where John Arthur Ackroyd applied his craft.

Well I tried to be subtle, but it’s a local story none the less. It hits close to home as the van they drove was spotted in Camp Sherman by a member of my family, while out for a jog.

The New and improved Oregon 2020/2021 Ski Season Thread

Early start at hrm, I’ll be in the lineup by 8. Red jacket, blue boots, black pack, skiing goats. Ask for change or just yell “hey, asshole!”. I respond to many titles. It was amazing surfy deepness until closing and full on nuking...

I don’t think you can ride the actual original Wagon Road between Little Nash and the MRT TH on quite any conveyance of your choosing, isn’t it guarded by boulders on both ends? I don’t remember if open to ATVs and dirtbikes or not ... I’ve ridden that on my MTB once when we were camped at Clear Lake. Couldn’t imagine hauling a horse drawn buggy down that thing!

Oh yeah, and totally agree about 126 vs Tombstone.

For warm storms or dry snow storms 126 is fine ... but for fluctuating snow temp storms when nuking - (like with intermittent snow on the highway at Blue River and east) viz can be pretty awful in there and some of the off camber sections can be sketch before they’ve been sanded. This year with no commercial traffic allowed between Vida and McKenzie Bridge it’s been a lot better of a drive, less irresponsible commercial truckers picking terrible places to discover that they needed to chain up or pull a lighter haul up the steep grades ...

Little Nash to MRT is below the section I described, however you are correct regarding that lower section.

This summer, drop a car at Fish Lake on the Clear Lake cutoff and take your bikes up to Big Lake in a second rig. Ride west through the airstrip and past Sand Mountain. Sand Mountain is a double cinder cone, the access road up goes into the saddle. Take the time to explore both peaks, you’ll be glad you did. It’s also a fun ride around the south crater. From the base, continue west from the black sand flat (there is only one road). From there you will drop into the forest on a truly fantastic downhill all the way to Fish Lake, or beyond.

Over the years, I’ve ridden it on bikes, sleds and moto.

ATV/moto access comes from Big Lake. I don’t remember boulders where OSWR crosses 126 but it was a while ago and I was on a MTB.

From east to west, I think the Wagon Road is blocked to full size motor vehicles at the intersection of NF 866 and 2676 (just south of Little Nash) ... then that last bit of the Old Wagon Road goes through the MRT TH parking area (east side of 126) before it crosses the highway to Fish Lake, then continues WNW to highway 20. I’ve never explored that part west of Fish Lake but I’d like to.

That’s a creepy story about Ackroyd ... an ODOT employee with a serial problem could have certainly had ample opportunity to do way more harm than the Oregonian could identify!

I'll be up getting leftovers at Skibowl Saturday Morning. Ask for change for a nickel. I'll be the purple jacketed guy with Dalbello Panterra 130's. Plan to hit the morning hours then head home. Sunday is gonna be bluebird at Tflat. So I will be there most of the day on Sunday. You can call me the flying eggplant.

I drove Corvallis to Bend every week for a year and took Tombstone every time. Once you know the road it is faster to Corvallis than 22. There is extremely limited passing opportunity, so you have to be ready to go for it once you see the opening, but typically no trucks and low traffic volumes.

I think the only time I didn’t take it was when they closed it, which is pretty rare.
