Things your Dad did that you do now...

I was just sharpening a pencil with a pocket knife and realized that's something my Dad did when I was a kid that I thought was strange at the time. Seems like a good thread topic. Let's hear what you've got.

I find myself stopping at those roadside history boards to “stretch my legs and learn a little something”. I used to be so annoyed on road trips when pops did that and now here I am.

My Dad was wicked OCD about sunglasses. Never touch the lenses, clean the smallest spec of dust off the lenses with a microfiber cloth, etc. Thats me now.

Often when talking to my kids I’ll hear the words coming out of my mouth while simultaneously hearing them come into my ear from my father.

“Careful. That thing will cut your fingers off. It was designed to cut.”

While my dad certainly let loose, he didn't say anything. He just farted without warning, even when he wasn't old and suffering from dementia. I at least say never hold in a fart. And I warn people, roll down the window. My dad would hotbox it.

Once I was old enough my dad retired from all outside the house maintenance. Mowing the lawn and maintaining the property was solely my gig, shoveling snow which thankfully didn't happen often on LI between 1978 and the time I moved out in 84, fixing the gates when the wood rotted away (every two years)... Why didn't they have vinyl fencing in the 70's? "That's why I had sons" he'd say but my little brother was allergic to that kind of stuff so I got lucky. After I left and little bro had to deal on his own the property got pretty ragged until he burned the house down and dad used the ins $$ to get the whole place fixed up.

My dad didn't do many things that created behavioral patterns in me other than maybe the fact that I'm quite the opposite of him. I just can't be the guy that fades into the woodwork and exists in the background like he can. My wife says I'm like him, I don't see it.
