What's shakin in Jackson Hole this week?

Don't feel like bothering anyone over in ski/snowboard so I'll ask you degens.

Got friends that head to Jackson tomorrow for the week with little to no plans and are looking for what's good.

I already suggested heading out to Wilson to check out the server closet fan but that seemed like it would be good for only an hour or so of their time.

What's open/going on during these unprecedented times that I can share with them? They're up for most anything, food/outdoors/shenanigans.

    Whatcha got?

rideit covered most of the food side.
But if your friends are into cycling they should rent bikes and go ride in Grand Teton Natl Park right now bc some of the roads have closed to motorists but remain open for cyclists, walkers & roller bladers, if that's their thing.
Park at the Bradley Taggart parking lot and go from there
It's a cool, special thing to be able to see the sights with no cars around.

The weather is about to go to shizz Saturday though so they should do that tmrw if they can.

I mean couldn't they just start in town and head out on the excellent bike path? We turned around at the Jenny Lake turnout IIR, for 50 miles or so.
Also, being tourists, we often take the road behind Miller's Butte and the Elk Refuge before dinner and look for sheep, antelope, and some years lions. Just a quick nature viewing is nice, ya know?

No, in the fall they close the path (which is next to the highway) due to concern that cyclists will stress the elk.

    not joking.

I just gotta respond. Not at all directed at LS...

All the traffic doesn't stress the elk, but the random cyclists do? That's a stretch.
And there's no law against riding on the roadside, beside traffic. That'd put ya about 10 feet from the path. Are they less stressed now?

What elk?, In all my time I've rarely seen an elk cross that highway, or even a dead one. I'm sure some do, but it's not like they stand around waiting for a gap.

By the time a herd rolls in and need some isolation so as not to burn calories, the path is covered by snow.

Fall is a great time to be cycling north of town.

The Elk refuge is more of a burden than a boon to this community. Just one opinion.

If we took back 500 acres on the south end, we could remedy a ton of housing issues.

Tell them to go north to Moran jct. for the bison selfie.

sure but I was pointing out the extra specialness of riding with no cars.
Maybe it am erroneous in the assumption that most tourists are generally looking for a shorter ride than 50 miles*
But yes you can certainly ride from town

It is incredibly stupid and dangerous that the bike path is closed right now, there aren't even any elk on the refuge, which is open to elk hunting anyway. Its the county and friends of pathways fault though. If they had waited another year or two to build it, they could have built it on the west side of the highway and the refuge wouldn't have had a say in it. I can't remember the specifics, it had to do with funding, but friends of pathways was in such a rush to build it that they made the concession to the refuge that it would be closed Nov. 1 to April 30.

The ‘average rental bike tourist’ at Snow King generally had a hard time even going up fish-hatchery hill to the viewpoint, and making it back to Snow King in under 3 hours.

    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

Thanks BCSAR and POWMOW Ski Patrol for rescues

For wildlife viewing now- The Elk Refuge Rd I think someone else mentioned. The big horn sheep are back there now and they frequently hang out on the rocky cliff side of the butte off the left side of the road. They're fun to watch. Dexterous AF

And for Grand Teton- they should probably drive whatever roads are left open with an emphasis more on the northern part of the park for animal viewing. The Elk are migrating so they're generally around the snake river.
It's typically best to go early and later in the day vs mid-day for seeing wildlife, but right now the bears and all animals are more active trying to eat as much as possible before winter, so more random viewing are possible.
