4.7 per USGS. I felt and heard 2 quick loud bangs lasting less than a second. I thought someone's propane tank had exploded. Unlike any earthquake I've felt.

I was wondering if others caught this. I felt it in bed. And noticed my huge tv was moving a little. Then my phone went off with an earthquake alert. Google said it was a 6 16 miles from me. It was not a 6. A sharp 4 would be about right. Wonder if we start getting little shocks all the time like it was 15 years ago

Definitely had more of the multi-second jolts and shaking variety at my place. Followed by a 30 minute power outage for almost 14k peeps. I have a friend in fair oaks that felt it.

I finally figured out that the two bangs I heard were the bottom hinged plexiglass windows on my covered outside staircase banging against the wall. I don't know if I'd have noticed the quake otherwise--my house shakes when the people next door close their door.

AEV - do you have a car? Mammoth is less then 3 hours and the Main Base is higher up than Granite Chief Peak. And they use salt.

You won’t catch me driving to Mammoth this late in the season. I’ll make it up early next season.

Looks like I can get 2 more days this weekend, with it freezing overnight. I can end the season with seven days, lucky number 7, I’m more OK with that than driving 6 hours per day to reach 10. I’m going to try to get 100 good days next season.

does distance from epicenter account for anything? Like a 5.8 felt 150 miles away, versus a 4.7 felt close by?

Yup. A seismologist could provide more details, but the further away, the less you feel. How far and how much depends on a lot of things like how deep was the epicenter and what topography and landmass and water are between you and it along the surface. For instance, seismic waves roll through sand with little resistance but get absorbs by stiff materials like granite.

Plenty of older homes in the area that do not meet current snow load code. Largish snow load on roofs in the midst of a winter storm plus moderate EQ (relative to the seismic hazard) plus a busy holiday winter weekend will equal a catastrophic disaster.

BTW, Richter scale only provided so much info about severity of shaking experienced. Depth of epicenter and geology around an epicenter are very important factors related to the experienced surface ground shaking.

^^ Yep. The Napa earthquake from several years back actually was closer to Sonoma but we sit on solid bed rock while Napa has a very soft sandy soil beneath it due to the river and delta. Almost no damage in Sonoma but quite a bit in Napa.

Just read that some quakes can make Tahoe several feet deeper. Interesting.

More than snow loads--after all, older houses have survived many monster snow years--a lot of houses, including ours, lack adequate shear wall and will collapse in a moderate earthquake if there's a lot of snow on the roof. Or is that what you mean?

Closing day at Alpine was fun for a few hours. And also props to our own gone2alpine for skiing every single day of the season (167) they were open. That’s nutty. Just added up my days and I’m at 69 (personal record) so I’m happy he didn’t beat me by more than 100. I did miss 5-6 weeks with the knee however.
