I usually look at what's happening in SLC as a general starting point for the rubies. Those snotel totals of 3'-4' aren't that impressive but they are pretty close to where they should be so does it get considerably deeper at higher elevations (Castle Lake is at 9800')?

And maybe there's a different set of rules in the Rubies, but isn't Castle Lake well into the Ruby Mountain Wilderness?

THE OFFICIAL 20/21 TAHOE SKI & SNOWBOARD THREAD. PANDEMIC SCHMANDEMIC!

Alpine Ghettos is spinning ABC this morning but no Summit. No wind whatsoever, even at the top. Staffing issues? Edit: opened an hour later.

Heard a rumor they’re planning to go Fri - Sun only after March.

I just met a guy who proudly boasted about riding his dirt bike on all of the Tahoe trails, and laughing at a ranger, whom he told "you'll never catch me". With basically zero enforcement, he's probably right. Wilderness boundaries don't mean much to those kinds of folks.

If Abc is going, summit is still staffed by patrol.

I probably know that guy, he is very vocal and boastful about poaching everything, and now loves taking his ebike (really an emoto as it does not have pedals) on sidewalks and pedestrian paths, hiking only trails, etc.
I stopped riding with him a while ago when this shift happened.

Kudos on skiing both resorts in one day. Can never get myself to drive over once I put boots on.

See the driving in ski boots thread for helpful tips.

Mechanics were working on Silvy, running it on and off. Does it mean anything? Wouldn't think there's enough snow.

I’d come to Squaw for Silvy.

I used to drive between CP and KW in boots no problem. I’m just too lazy to walk the the car and back to a lift. If I knew I could get a front row spot at Far East, I might give it a try.

Well it’s just a rumor (uh, or email) but it came from a pretty reliable source who would definitely hear about something like this in advance. Curious what gone2alpine might have to say...

And yeah, it got warm as shit today but it was pretty great actually. Sherwood, however, went from perfect to slop in the span of 2-3 laps.

They have to run all days until at least April 4 because of ski teams. I could easily see them doing weekends only at AM from then on. Wonder if they'll allow hiking on weekdays. Also wonder if Olympic Valley will spin all 7 days.

Is it similar to the Kirkwood formula of red ropes and red posts, that blend all together?

    I’ve heard stories about those.

I have 11 days so far this season and feel very lucky to have not gotten wrapped up in a rope. The mazes confuse me this season.

April 4 is Easter so yeah it’d probably be after that I suppose, although a lot of kids have spring break that following week, including mine. So I hope not.

Haven't heard much on that front. But midweek numbers have been much stronger this year, probably more so than ever. Part of that has been a very consistent series of race events on the Roo. As always, I would much rather see simplified operations for the midweeks late season...Summit only or Summit + Roundhouse.

I would say there is no way that midweek hiking would be allowed if they are weekends only for operations.
    Fuck those fucking motherfuckers!

If Alpine only had the Summit chair I could absolutely handle that. One of the best chairs in the country in terms of pure terrain access.

As long as it's cold enough at night it would be a shame to lose Sherwood in the spring. To me the second best feature of AM, after the hikes, is that there is good skiing on all exposures, so you can follow the sun in the spring. In recent years though April has been too warm for good spring skiing.

I heard about the avalanche death in the Rubies, but know no details. Called Ruby Heli last week, and they said they were going through a major avy cycle that basically mirrored what Utah has been experiencing. Said they had seen "Hundreds of 2, 3, 4 sized natural avalanches across the range".

What we saw this weekend was the facet layer improving through melting and consolidation (where we were at least). Snow was very good.
