Nice, meter-man. [ETA: And Mr. Hankey!]

Wobby or others: Any info on conditions in Great Basin National Park/Wheeler Peak? Is that persistent layer still . . . persistent?

A few from last weekend in the greater Tahoe area:

Great day at AM on Monday. Followed the sun around and things softened nicely. A cool breeze kept the temps down and the snow never got sticky. Best of all...No one on the hill and skied onto the lift from start to finish👍

Sherwood cliffs. A little crunchy in the shade, stick to the sunny turns and it was all good.

Traverse to the South Face. Corn cycle is in effect. Smooth and rippable all the way down to Sherwood.

Got an Al Pastor Burrito in KB and enjoyed it and the sunset on the way home. Love this time of year. Off to Mammoth in a couple hours.

That is its name. Avalanche bowl is skiers right, directly behind Glove Rock. V Tree is just a line in the bowl.

Thanks for the stoke! Amazing how few people there are if it hasn’t snowed in awhile but the conditions are still good. Added bonus is an easy drive with little traffic.

Not sure about GBNP or far eastern NV, but looks like they've been getting missed a bit. Northern NV getting the goods right now, some places saw 200% + of typical February snow. We were out North of Elko last weekend, and found super deep blower pow. Santa Rosa Range also skiing well right now, though they only got a few inches over the weekend (vs feet for NE Nevada).

Lots of layering in the snowpack still, but haven't found any spots with as bad of a PWL as in the toiyabes. Most spots have facets, but in the last few weeks I have mainly found them to be strengthening, warming, freezing, and generally consolidating. It also helps that N facing (main problem aspect) hasn't had good snow. Lots of NW winds out in the basin recently.

Lamance Creek in the Santa Rosas from yesterday. Highly recommend this spot for overall ease of access and quality of skiing.

Have been trying to be responsible this season (in SF) :/ Haven't been on skis since a long day trip to shasta in may...

I was considering doing a quick early morning/day trip to castle peak or donner peak... any advice for an easy/low key way to at least get 1 tour in this season?

I don’t really understand your question. There’s been a little bit more traffic at times and the parking that tends to get full on weekends gets full a little earlier, but this season touring isn’t really any different than any other year.

Be respectful of the people who live in the place you’re visiting and go skiing. The conditions won’t blow your mind this weekend, but if you haven’t skied since May I bet you’ll have fun.

You fully answered my question that wasn't really a good question, thanks

Ending last year, I was wondering how much of a shit show the backcountry would be this season. Also the previous page someone mentioned the sno-park at boreal is a shitshow, so I wasnt really sure.

It seems like the people who aren't respectful are clogging up highways and resorts on weekends per usual (based on some people I know who are traveling/resort skiing like nothing is different this year), so if I plan it smart and have low expectations I will have a good day that completely tires my out of shape self out.

My question was also fishing for more advice on some easy tours that I could do as a day trip from SF, but I think castle peak might just win and is a known quantity by me (other than the state of the sno-park).

On a weekend get there early, particularly for Castle. The Sno-Park does turn into a shitshow but generally later in the morning. No parking in the Boreal lot without a ticket. Weekdays are no problem.

Helicopter landed at Gold Coast today. For some reason, instead of telling people as they got on or off Shirley that the slope from the top of Shirley to GC was closed, patrol positioned themselves down the slope a ways and screamed at people as they went by.
After the helicopter landed, patrol brought a loaded sled nearly to it but I didn't see anyone loaded into the helicopter before it took off. I hope that doesn't mean what I think it means.

    drug deal gone bad?

it could just mean the person had the presence to refuse a flight they felt they didn't need/couldn't afford.
    or the other thing

good point--the refusal, not the drug deal. There are no drugs in Tahoe.

I worked during a code blue last year where the helicopter made it halfway to the hill before being called off because the person was revived and refused the air ambulance.

You’re probably the first person I’ve heard of that actually hasn’t been coming to Tahoe to ski. Honestly at this point I think everyone’s past the shaming point and you should be able to get out and enjoy the snow without being hassled or anything like that. Just be respectful of everyone around you and it’ll be chill. I’m not really for masks in the outdoors but I’ll rock a buff around the neck and pull it up if I pass any people on the trail that make it a point to wear a mask.

Lately on Friday’s/weekends the forest service has been stationed at the head of the sno park entrance checking for passes and turning people around that don’t have any. Their sign says 100 car limit and they ask you to respect the various no parking signs that they have posted. Seems to be pretty effective on the days I’ve seen them there.

Here’s a pic of Castle from today. South side is getting kinda boney in spots but still nice rippable hero corn today.
