Caldor burn severity from the Lookout (Sentinel satellite imagery)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzXXc4uqsuM

Sierra at Tahoe got a bit toasty, especially West World area. Probably black snags if the satellite can be trusted. Mr Toads and Corral will be sunnier as well (though I don't know exactly where they are). Looks like a patch of forest got cooked behind the Spur too.

For real. I watched a bunch of B-roll from KTVU. Tubbs fire or similar near Sonoma. There will be a burning bush on one side of the road. Then a gust makes the bush flare, and all the dry and charred and flaming leaves near it get up and tumble across the road, carrying the fire with them. One continuous 100 foot long ground hugging flame reaches across and lights the other side. Obvious hazard when you see it, but had never occurred to me. Also saw cars, barns, houses burn that could have easily been saved, if there were a fire hose and a spare firefighter. Too big too fast they were all busy going door to door. Eventually they told the news crew to go too.

This summer, trees have dropped a lot of leaves already. Even the evergreens like live oak and bay laurel are dropping leaves.

Here's a list of Placer Communities:

Truckee is mostly in Nevada County but a good portion goes across the county line into Placer, including all of Northstar.

As for defensible space, I know they've been doing a ton of work in recent years to create fire breaks on the northern side of Tahoe Donner, which was part of the motivation to buy all of that land back there.

Under California law incorporated towns and cities (there's apparently a difference but I don't know what it is) cannot cross county lines. Which is exactly why the counties need to be redrawn--so that Truckee has some say in it's own development, rather than the supes down in Placerville.

(Kingvale is a "census-designated place", not incorporated.. And a little corner of Donner Lake is in Placer County. Road maintenance etc is carried out by Truckee under agreement with Placer County. I don't know which you would go to for a building permit if you were on the Placer County side. Ponderosa Palisades is similarly split. Special districts OTOH often cross county lines--like the hospital district. Coming from Detroit, where police, fire, schools, water, sewers, garbage is all under the city it took time for me to get used to all the special districts that control most aspects of day to day life. I still haven't gotten used to the town manager system, where elected council members have no idea wtf is going on and do whatever town staff tells them to do. If the council does rear up on its hind legs and passes something on its own initiative--like the STR ordinance--the staff just doesn't bother to enforce it.)

    Thanks. I’ll check it out.

I am partially aware of what paradise was like before the Camp Fire. I observed the citizens recall and throw out municipal employees and local politicians for trying to improve the town, like trying to install a municipal wastewater system or improve their water treatment system.

Fwiw, the local parks district has an amazing idea about a City wide fuel break that circles the town.

Yeah, I think we discussed it in this thread a few years ago. I've never seen anything quite like it before (at least not in CA), where the same city and mailing addresses are literally split between counties. Very unusual for sure. There's probably an interesting backstory.

Was just about to ask this too. I’m looking towards Martis out the window of my home office in Glenshire, and I *might* be seeing smoke, but hard to tell with the clouds

As in "Stressed and/or dying due to lack of precipitation"? There's supposedly 1500 acres of dead trees in the Oakland hills as the result of current drought conditions; I suspect that it's at least as bad in the Sierra foothills. Kind of a one-step-forward (loss of leaves), two-steps-back (dead trees) kind of thing.

There already was a Martis Fire in 2001.

That said, I'm looking at Church, Rose, Relay, and the Martis Fire scar right now and see no smoke.

Jericho brings the hype and the fear-porn for sure.

That's my guess. I was in east bay hills. The trees look ok to my untrained eye though some of the underbrush is dying.

now that the dark clouds have moved out, I’m not seeing anything that looks like smoke either.

I believe Jericho is just relaying Cal Fire radio chatter, so while I don’t think he’s fear mongering, I think you need to keep in mind that what is being said could be ‘reports of’ and haven’t necessarily been verified yet.

He does report that flyovers are happening to investigate both those possible fires near truckee

That’s not what you want to hear right after a nice rain
Hoping the rain helped with both of the big fires

In my slice of the foothills, I ’m observing an increase in pondo pines dying from pine beetle. Not yet close to as bad as several years back, but more than the past few years.

Forgive my ignorance, but who the fugg is Jericho Island?
Went to the Twitter link, but they supply zero info on who they are and what their credentials are.
I can't believe you are all relying on news reports from someone whose avatar is Tinkerbell in stretch pants...

I'm really hoping someone posts some pics of the after at S@T -- especially in West Bowl. The last cam image from the West Bowl base is 8/28, which probably means the communications line is toast. The Aspen + Aspen West cam appears to show some torched trees in the background but the rest of the working cams look more or less OK.
"Holy Cow!" someone exclaimed from the back of the stationwagon.

I think he gave a minor bio a while back, but if I remember correctly he’s basically some random dude listening in on Cal Fire radio chatter and relaying what he’s hearing.

Could be full of shit, but seems like a lot of effort if he’s actually just making that all up.

Well, It's all we got for real time info and it's not a news report that he does. He hasn't been full of shit for many weeks reporting on Caldor. And he corrects his mistakes and asks people to correct his mistakes if they see any. He just relays info and holds back on rumors for the most part. He's not predicting anything and anyone with a scanner can fact check him.
