I'm under the impression that conventional chains won't fit in the wheel wells of a lot of cars. (I've been driving 4WD/AWD exclusively for 40 years. Am I right?)
I would imagine they would either not fit or be a big risks for some cars. This BMW is a good example of what happened to cars over the last 40 years where the wheels have gotten huge and the tires have no sidewall. Cars have gotten more sporty as people have gravitated towards SUVs which also means that they are lower to the ground and have less room in wheel wells for chains. That’s a long way of saying that a BMW 3 series from 40 years ago was a lot more snow worthy in terms of chains and ground clearance compared to a newer model.

If you've got the room it makes sense to have a winter car and a summer car. No need to fight the crowds in Truckee all wanting their winter tires put on the same day. Since you drive each one half the time they'll both last twice as long. No need to drive the same boring Taco or Suby all year long. I realize a lot of people do have two cars; I don't understand why everyone doesn't. I've always wanted an Alfa Spider.

Two vehicles is definitely the goal one day. Certainly wouldn’t mind having a pickup for the winter and summer travel on dirt roads. And way better access to east side and Great Basin skiing.

For those whose bowels don't release until the trailhead, may I recommend Virtika...? Just return after using to Mr Lesh for a full refund. Thank you for keeping our outdoors clean!

Last time I went a few weeks ago it wasn't working either.

I met Lesh back in 2008 when he was skiing for Liberty. He was as much of a clown then as he is now.

Seems crazy from where I stand but I have only been following the case rates in El Dorado which are at an all time high. Considerably higher than what got our hospitals to this full. But the region is tied to what happens around Sacramento and they may be doing better. Reno is a factor too and they are doing better as well.

Regional order lifted,. Truckee's web site said we're back in purple tier. Nevada County site says the same. The County could still decide to keep additional restrictions in place but it doesn't look like it will. Truckee follows the County.

    Edit--Truckee just released this email:

Effective Immediately- Regional Stay at Home Order Lifted for the Greater Sacramento Region (Truckee)
Truckee as part of the Greater Sacramento Region will be lifted from the Regional Stay at Home Order. This is effective immediately and due to the ICU bed capacity four-week projection exceeding 15% in a sustained forecast.

As of Tuesday, January 12, 2021, Truckee as part of the Greater Sacramento Region, will be lifted from the Regional Stay at Home Order (RSAHO). This is effective immediately and due to the ICU bed capacity four-week projection exceeding 15% in a sustained forecast.

On December 10, 2020, the Greater Sacramento Region was placed under the RSAHO, which was directed to be in place for a minimum of 21 days. After the 21-day period, the region’s four-week ICU bed capacity was projected on a daily basis by the State.

What changes from the lifting of the Regional Stay at Home Order:

Gatherings: Under the RSAHO all gatherings are prohibited. In Purple outdoor gatherings are allowed with a maximum of three households and other modifications
Hair Salons/Barbershops/Personal Care: Closed under RHSO, open with modifications in the purple tier
Hotels and Lodging: Critical infrastructure and COVID response only under RHSO, open with modifications in the purple tier
Wineries: Closed under RHSO, outdoor only with modifications in the Purple Tier
Restaurants: Take out only under RHSO, outdoor dining with modifications allowed in Purple Tier

Quick shout out and two thumbs up to Meter-Man and his partner for the courtesy and smarts of not dropping down on me [or the large Alpenglow guided group behind me] as I finished the skinner on the north side of Castle mid-day Sunday. Much appreciated. A week prior, I only saw one other person back there from afar and no tracks to cross. Wow, what a difference a week can make. In 20 years of skiing this zone it was the busiest I could remember. Lots of friendly skiers and a few biler's frapping. And yes, skiing is fun. FWIW, the FS was controlling the entrance to the Sno-park so I guess I should not have been surprised.

Was that you rolling solo (with the Sally MTN Explore boots) on the choice spot? I knew that dude/you was core.

We had done a few laps on the northside and were headed back home. We did some funny downclimbs back down the south side. Porny south aspects; rippable firm north.

I saw on that other social application that Wobby was there too. Had we known, we could have had a little mini-summit...

WHAT'S THAT?? DID SOMEONE SAY A "TAHOE MAGGOT SUMMIT"???

Covid naturally seems like the best time for that, right?

Newsom realized that so few people were following his “stay at home” order that it wasn’t worth the political price. I can’t find any numbers that would justify lifting the stay at home “order” especially since in reality it was voluntary.

Yeah, i got that too. I did the unthinkable and went to the Truckee Safeway last Friday and there was barely any line. Something tells me that won't be the case this Friday.

WTF. If we're going to have a drought can't we at least have a sunny drought?

I do not like flat light
I do not like flat light at all
I cannot tell if I am upright
Or if I have taken a fall

It's not so bad if there's fresh snow
Then I can dance among the trees
It's not so nice when it's been warm
Then followed by a hard freeze

My balance is not what it used to be
    My reflexes have gotten slow
I'd rather ski than write "poetry"
I wish the fuck it would snow

Don't worry, my kids still can't leave SF. However, if you see a black blur skiing around Squaw on Friday for his birthday, its not me.

I was indeed there! Too bad I didn't see ya, we could have had a 6ft aparty.
Unless either of you were the two guys who very graciously agreed to not set a skinner across my landing, and instead bootpacked straight up to the cornice. BIG PROPS to those guys for being chill and agreeable, despite me merely shouting down my requests from the top. Thanks.
