I just looked at a few and yeah they don't agree on much other than Norm MacDonald at/near the top. I love Che/Jost, this list doesn't so much: https://ew.com/tv/weekend-update-anchors/

Personally I think Michael Che's jokes are almost always better than Jost's, though.

They both just read jokes their writers wrote, right?

I know there are a few they may write themselves.

They are the writers. If they are getting most of the content from other writers then I guess Michael Che is the better judge of what's funny.

Yeah, Che & Jost have been co-head writers for the show since 2017. Che is funnier but I think that's in part because Jost plays the role of straight man or foil for a lot of the jokes.

It's my understanding that they have two additional writers dedicated to WU, so basically the four of them create the whole bit (plus any of the walk-ons)

    Definitely

edit: went and dug up their lie detector appearance. Che's savage.

Carlin delivered a very crafted/scripted message and got laughs along the way.

You could watch a Carlin show and not laugh for minutes at a time, but still appreciate the wit and intelligence behind the commentary. He had some genius/groundbreaking bits, but he also put out something like 20 albums, a lot of which are completely unremarkable. I find Chappelle to be consistently funnier, but he’s a bit more lowbrow and aiming at a broader audience.
    Cobb, Ruth, DiMaggio, or Williams?

They've settled into a decent groove the last couple months. Last week wasn't off the charts but that Update bit and Lisa from Temecula were solid. New cast and writers seem to be gelling a bit.

According to what was said in one of these, (don’t recall which, listened to both on a long drive yesterday), Lorne’s shooting for 50 (at least)...

    Lorne Michaels Part 1

    Lorne Michaels Part 2

    Mother Lode of goodies here...

Fly On the Wall Podcast with Carvey and Spade (Amazon)

P.S. IMHO this alone justifies Tina Fey taking the helm when the time comes.

The one where they did a Hallmark Holiday Movie Halloween serial killer version was pretty funny. Totally nailed it.. "I've got to get back to my successful Manhattan NYC Career".. LOL.. Every one is like that..
It was fun to see Walken, but I was hoping for David S Pumpkins..
