Surprisingly fun skiing in PC today... if you avoided the death cookies and bumps.

Hoping to find some powder before it gets wrecked by the sun after work today. Would folks anticipate wet slide risk on N facing slopes over 10k in LCC this afternoon?

^^^ snow in N facing trees at 9K was still cold around 1PM.
edit: my guess would be higher likelihood of those slopes being scoured in spots as opposed to wet-slidy

nice night, followed by a nice morning. nice n quiet out there which is also nice.
also, tell all your friends that lapping the lower apron on superior and/or skinning up little superior is fucking lame.

That's not necessarily a "new trend"but holy hell I've seen so many people parking at the "superior lot" by hellgate and heading up to Little Superior, as opposed to alta central trailhead.

Wow! Alta was great this morning. Definitely some icy bumps underneath but all things considered, it was a legit powder day. Certain aspects were skiing like winter even at mid day!

^^^ almost certainly affected by direct sunshine: ALT at top of collins maxed at 33, AGD (Alta Guard) at 50, UTWLC (White Pine) at 50, ATB (Alta Base) at 45, SBDU1 (Snowbird 9100 ft, I think in Gad Valley) at 42

Straight n face would probably have been good this morning. We topped out at a 10.4 N face last night and it was soft and cold. But lower down (9.2ish?) it was getting wet, and anything slightly off to the west or east or even lower angle North was very crusty.
Anything shaded was skiing well - we found pockets of wonderful snow north of tall pine trees as well.
lone star, I have been trying to use the "Solar Radiation" measure on some of those UDOT weather stations to understand which aspects might be sun-affected. Have you ever done the same? UTWLC doesn't have the measure, but UTPLC further down canyon does. In BCC, UTCDF and UTSTR have the measure.
After some middling-effort googling, it seems like max summertime solar radiation for our latitude is about 1100 W/M*M, and I have assumed that you can figure out how cloudy - and even how low-angle - the sun was on snow at certain times throughout the day. Which should tell you where cold snow is likely to be on the compass/terrain. I'm pretty sure this method holds up except for the fact that there is significant spatial variability between, say, UTPLC and upper White Pine as we discovered yesterday. I have a view of the mountains out my window so maybe I need to cross-check the weather station w/ cloud cover (inconsistent or totally blocked) to determine how much variability there might be.

Interesting is an understatement.

I would love to see what percentage of passholder respondents chose "get rid of Ikon" and then showed they were only willing to pay 10% more for that privilege. Day tickets only ftw!

I chose that and indicated I'd be willing to pay 25% more. With the volume of Ikon skiers though, not sure even that would touch the revenue difference. And there'd be a dirtbag revolt. All that said, I mostly ski Snowbird but did the Alta upgrade last year and in multiple past years. Figure we're all in it together in LCC though.

It goes without saying, but we should encourage everyone we know to answer the survey, indicate that they would like them to remove the multipasses and answer that they would be willing to pay more. It's a long shot, but part of me has hope the answers will be considered to some extent when decisions are made...

Also thought it was interesting that Grizzly was the only lift option that actually expanded terrain . While even the idea of a grizzly lift prob makes some here want to self-immolate, I imagine most inbounds alta skiers would prefer that to adding a lift that makes it easier to access hike to terrain.
maybe im not thinking about this correctly, but adding a lift without adding skiable acres seems like a surefire way to degrade the experience. Same goes for adding parking, gondola, etc without adding skiable acres....
And yes, ik that castle is inbounds but it was open for all of like 3 weeks this year. If there was a lift that would probably change?

I notice lift to top of Baldy isn’t included in the choices. Must be already considered a sure thing.
