WASATCH STOKE, CONDITIONS, OBSERVATIONS and ASSORTED DRIVAL 20-21

Kid was driving down on LCC today. Rental skis fly off of the car in front of him. He dodges one, nails the other, pulls over. Car is fine. Guy who lost the skis pulls over too. Asks if car is ok. Car is fine. Dude turns around, gets back in his car, drives away leaving skis in the middle of the road in pieces.

    Just leaves. Gone.

Kid looks around, pulls the skis off the road so it’s safe for the other cars, then figures it’s time to go and drives home.

Wonder what happens if you just don’t return your rental skis?

The shop probably doesn't care to much. They already have your card on file.

A few skis have been left up 9240' over the years by folks who made it down to the base another way somehow. A call to whatever shop they came from has almost always ended with the skis going to a local gear exchange and the money in the employee pool.

Busted! It’s definitely that and not that I’m too cheap to spend $700 or whatever a private lesson at Alta costs.

It means the boys is gettin' horny.

Half the emp housing just left to go on their first tour, asking "how do I turn this on?"
And the other half is at a 100 person birthday party at the Tram Club.

Good thing COVID went away on November 3rd.

Speaking of, which one of you sent this to me?

I need to go to Utah.
    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

Thanks BCSAR and POWMOW Ski Patrol for rescues

    solid day yesterday.
Skied it top to bottom, probably the best conditions I've ever caught down that face.
pretty trippy skiing down to a snow covered 210, everyone's response "oh shit, is this the road?!"

Looks like fun terrain. Is that something that cleared out with heli-bombing after the last cycle?

Lone contends for my favorite Wasatch Peak, in particular because I'm so taken by the Cirque. Everytime I drive up I-15, it takes my breath away.

Has anyone skied the ramp on Question Mark Wall? It seems from a bit of Googling that this is well-known to climbers as Collins Highway, sitting above Pete's Staircase.

It might not be the most incredible skiing, but it's a beautiful line so I'd love to find a way to incorporate it into a day at some point (ascend or descend it).

I don't know about these days but back in the 90's it meant that the young, male lodge employees were getting ancy in the pancy.

I'll never forget visiting a friend during the spring of 99 while sitting with him and a pretty young lady poolside at the P-Dawg and watching ten or so male employees go full on Nat-Geo, horny monkey style in the pool. It was quite the show as they went full-retard having one pretty gal there.

FYI just don’t let Udot or the Alta marshals catch you. When the gates are down the road is technically closed to foot traffic also. They’re trying to still protect the by pass road and superior lot at the bird. Both of which got hammered by little superior during the last Avy cycle. Hellgate residents often have straight line travel options only accessible by calling Alta central. This is a weird gray area that I’m hoping gets resolved soon.

    altacoup, interesting points.
    hardkorps, clarification?

During the late 80's, 90's, and 00's we were living in the Hilton; Snowbird employee housing.
Superior got shot plenty and was hardly skied.
Could get a lap in before work using Ramer Assault snowshoes and alpine gear.
    Zero competition.
Went straight up the gut of the face.
Not when there was deep slab instability.
Waited a requisite amount of time, even if it meant a zipper crust.
Between gunfire, sluffs, and being S facing and all, felt safe when there.
Did that lap enough, didn't need a headlamp.
One of my mentors, Liam Fitzgerald, lived in the A frame, a now nonexistent structure by Hellgate.
He would walk to work, observe my tracks, and lecture me on how I was breaking many rules.
Alone, maximizing exposure by ascending the line, no com., etc.
My logic was based on the fact that I indeed was alone.
I figured that by ascending the line, I could always turn around upon reaching shitty conditions.
Turned around plenty coming up out of the central chute into the triangle on account of conditions.
More feared ski checking the high triangle alone, with loading from prevailing winds.
And that route was way less energy spent than going from the guard.
Woulda had to get up much earlier to go that way.

Moral: Don't do as I say, or as I did?
One better be sure of oneself...

Anyways, brutah's ski of main Superior yesterday follows the rule of skiing something that just went big after a little new snow...why not?
Your photo sent me to a happy place...
    Thanks, Jimmy

Time spent skiing cannot be deducted from one's life.
