Jesus. All I want to know is does the Ikon pass come with a chinstrap?
I should probably change my username to IReallyDon'tTeleMuchAnymoreDave.

Nah man, we just need a transportation solution. It's tough as these are small dead end canyons next to growing megalopolis

Given the sprawl in the SLC area and the route up BCC/LCC, is it really the ikon pass that killed whatever the "Wasatch experience" was? It definitely feels like there are enough people living around here to clog up the canyons every big day, ikon or not.

That's fair....but in the end, aren't these resorts in control of whether they join or not and if they limit daily capacity? Seems much more reasonable to be salty at individual resorts for profit seeking vs caring about whoever is being hurt by the ikon. If they had no choice but to join the pass cartel then it says something about what the local community will support vs the services they provide.
I'm too young to remember but was it the ikon pass that made it completely unaffordable to travel and ski a lot without it? If Alta was still selling $37 passes and weren't on the ikon, would the crowds really be any smaller?

WASATCH STOKE, CONDITIONS, OBSERVATIONS and ASSORTED DRIVAL 20-21
Just skied down about that long ago. No signs of any problems. There was a big group skiing suicide and getting drone footage. Could be them. Unless something happened just after us but there was no big groups behind us.
All time conditions. Took a lot of snow to the face. Better pics coming later once I get them off the big camera.
Edit: just heard patrol was helping someone. Must have been the guys that dropped after us.Last edited by dfinn; 02-28-2021 at 12:40 PM.

In Wasatch weekday only pass is a no brainer. Alta charges about $600 extra to ski on Saturday and Sunday. I think DV Full pass is about a grand more than weekday only. Hike returns on the weekend. This morning I saw maybe 4 people. Otherwise drive the extra hour and a half to PowMow. You will still get more turns in then skiing in the cottonwoodss

WASATCH STOKE, CONDITIONS, OBSERVATIONS and ASSORTED DRIVAL 20-21
I am not at all saying ikon isn’t a big part of the issue, but like I posted earlier in the JH thread I also think the advances in gear are a big issue as well. It’s far easier to ski now, and it’s far easier to ski harder stuff than it used to be. Better skis, warmer clothes, warm helmets, cell phones to ask for help and get guidance, warm comfortable boots ( for intermediates). It’s way more welcoming. More people skiing because it’s so much easier to ski and most of this has really taken off in the last 10-15 years - and is starting to hit critical mass.

After a full season of keeping it mellow got up on high north facing Kessler today to assess the snowpack... its looking much better, the PWL is bonding and gaining strength. Dug a pit to the ground, 1 to 2 finger all the way. ECT produced no results, wailed on the snowpack and nothing. multiple shovel pry produced no weak interfaces or shears. Obviously this doesn't apply to all zones and aspects so do your homework.
so we did...
pow surfing as usual these days

if an ikon passholder switches to backcountry you will complain that the backcountry is more crowded....
My pal in the couloir couloir today. Looked like its northern brother is untracked still, if I was looking at the right chute (I have been practicing my arborism recently, so I think I was......)

Another stellar day. This season just keeps on getting better. So stoked
Sent from my iPhone using TGR ForumsI need to go to Utah.
Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?
So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....
Thanks BCSAR and POWMOW Ski Patrol for rescues

I don't have any great shots but I can also confirm that today was all time good. Low crowds, stable snow, excellent powder, and perfect weather.
Weirdest thing we saw all day was a party center punching the steep bits of Lake Peak.
