Based on a tip from Geezer Steve, I use a Saucony Hattori running shoe as an approach shoe for volcanoes or any kind of spring ski approach where there is extended dirt walking to reach snow. The shoes weigh only 8.8 ounces, and pack up very small, so you can just stash them in your pack when you switch to ski boots. If you have good ankles, I have no problems busting out several miles of rough dirt walking in them with skis and boots on my pack. They have an eva sole, with almost no rubber, and velcro straps so they area incredibly minimalist. I don't think they are making them anymore, but you can still find them on amazon, or maybe there are some similar shoes out there. A lot more cost effective to destroy running shoes than your ski touring boots. You can also just stash shoes in the woods if you are returning the same way. I also use these shoes as camp shoes for backpacking, which work great as well.

Can't believe this thread dropped to the second page.

For me, it's either Plow Chicka Plow Plow or Sir Plows a Lot.

If anyone is up at White Pass on Monday or Tuesday... give a pm or spare change me for a nickel.

    I'll be the flying eggplant.

Hmm, pretty quiet in here. Busy skiing old pow with a little graupel over here T-F. Snow has really held up well on steeper north facing terrain. A little graupel and snow each day keeping things fresh.

We had a certain action sports website here yesterday shooting some footage to promote the “Indy Pass”.

“Wow!, we weren’t expecting pow shots.” The snow is great right now.

I saw that after the fact, quite surprised.

Nothing to see here, move along...

What’s an Indy pass? Still a little firm on Rock Garden. But yeah...pretty good above there.

It's a multi mountain pass that favors the lower key places. TGR is doing some kind of media expose on a lot of them. White Pass is a member of the Indy pass group. We have Mt Hood Fusion Passes. Which are part of the powder alliance... another Indy-like pass. WP is also a member of the powder alliance. Gives us three free midweek days at WP. Took one in early March and got a corn popping good time of a day. Taking the other two this week. Love WP.

Rock garden, I’m dying here. We were skiing boot top over soft snow between upper Toketie and Micro 4. Sun exposed has mostly been coral reef this week.

Crystal was relatively empty and had pretty good visibility for an overcast day. A couple inches of fresh over crusty stuff, but if you kept away from South-facing slopes, it was still pretty rippable.

I got new boots so today was "break in new boots day"

Decided to make their first run be one from the top of the King. Cattle trail of a hike, slow as molasses, but mainly because all the CMAC groms were going to the top, most for the first time, so it's pretty hard to be mad about seeing a bunch of kids getting stoked on being on the King. Kudos to the coach I saw carrying four sets of skis up the hike.

After that spun some laps with a friend and his kids. Then went up to Black Tusk in the late afternoon, came down at 430 right as the wind started whipping, it started snowing harder, and visibility went flat, only to find about 100 people skinning up under Quicksilver for some Crystal event.

A good day aside from how my feet feel having been put through new boot blues for the whole day.

Ridgetops are scoured af. South facing stuff that's low in elevation is mushy. South facing stuff up high is a grab bag. North facing stuff is soft with a sometimes noticeable crust a couple inches down. North facing stuff that is windloaded is deep and light, though occasionally slabby too.

Pretty good day up near Stevens today, the north facing aspects got deeper throughout the day, and there is a solid amount of dust-2" on a firm crust on south facing aspects. As long as you were above 4500' it was nice just about everywhere. Tomorrow and Thursday look to be the best days
