Hello Mags to the North of Oregon!

My fusion pass has three free days at White Pass. Used one for a glorious spring day last week. Got 25 laps of perfect corn. So, we are considering a few more days the 22-26th and I can't be more excited. That place is a ghost town M-F.

I get it, it's mellow. But there seems to be more goods than meets the eye and I can't wait to return.

Question: Where would I find beta on the backcountry gates and routes? My Oregon Descents Backcountry Ski Routes Book was written before the lifts were put back there.

Noticed one gate at the top going up hogback and a return about 500 vert below. Any help would be greatly appreciated. You can PM me if you'd prefer. That bowl on the right seems really accessible and easy to exit.

Go out and get lost, then find your way back. That's how I did it.

Everyone wants this shit handed to them on a platter anymore. Earn it

    This. But don't get lost.

It's pretty easy to figure out around there.

At worst don't ski down something you're not comfortable skinning back up out of.

The out track comes back right under the open slope on the lookers right of your photo. The slope on lookers right also gets shredded by punters who take two turns and traverse back to the ski resort. Much better skiing from the top of hogs back. Ski it live, then when you stop in the flats look for the skin track heading north back to the ski resort. If you have ski toured a lot elsewhere it is pretty simple.

Or do. Something about wondering around in the woods until you find what you’re looking for.

I'm not sure why everyone on this board feels like setting out with no foreknowledge aside from what you can glean from topo maps and summer time satellite pictures is such a great idea.

In that spirit, to answer your question the 1998 BackcountrySki! Washington has a couple routes around White Pass and some descriptions that may or may not still be accurate

The 1999 Burgdorfer "100 Classic Backcountry Ski & Snowboard Routes in Washington" has a description of the Hogsback route but nothing else for White Pass.

If you have trouble tracking down the books or whatever, feel free to PM me.

Thank you. Not stupid, dumb, or have a deathwish as I'm not going that far out there. I just was trying to get Beta from the top of Hogsback to the pct cutback that you can clearly discern a reentry onto rim rock. if that's the trail I'm thinking of. I'm gonna be one of those punters and do shreddy fun laps. With a little bit of hiking. Or... we may go to Targhee

Standard decent with standard up track.

Gunsight is a good short ski, just annoying when people take literally two turns and set tons of traverse tracks across the thing instead of skiing it out to the bottom.
