Oh I’m sure they found a waist deep drift for 2-3 feet, but the next 30 feet was probably dust on wind hammered dirt. It only took 20 minutes for the rescued to get from where they were found to the bottom.
“Cannon Mountain Staff and a Conservation Officer used a snow cat to get as close to a cell phone GPS coordinate as possible. They then hiked in and located the two snowboarders at 10:20 pm. The two were assisted out to a ski trail and transported by snow cat to the ski lodge arriving at 10:45pm. The two were cold and wet but refused medical treatment. “
That being said I had friends spend a miserable night “lost” only to realize at dawn they could see the parking lot.

It's a story nearly as old as the mountains themselves.

27º bob with 7/16" of new snow made up of fluffy flakes that would give Snowflake Gently a stiffy. 3800' ceiling for you flat light enjoyment.

I knew this season would be different - but all I want to do these days is make turns under the lights. WTF.

My MO this season has been uphilling exclusively. Once "in the wild," several times in-bounds. Caught some sweet fan gun snow on Saturday morning that kinda almost felt like the real thing.
I just brought a pair of short, skinny, light touring boards in to get mounted with some light bindings. Maybe on that setup I'll be able to squeeze in a second lap before work in the mornings.

It's definitely a regional thing, I'd say Jiminy may have the best night skiing around up there although that place above doesn't look bad.
VVGG as we used to refer to the vaunted range in the Jersey Alps....
I'm itching.. Been looking at whats available outside VVGG these days sorta slim pickins but I've got my eyes on a few off the radar spots.

^^ yup jiminy is the night ski best. fast lifts, great snowmaking and lots of steep options. outside my state, so at a mere 35mins away, too far away.
i'm now roughing it at a full hour away!
yea i like the hill i'm skiing but they've had trouble keeping their only summit chair running. and their steepest terrain is no-go thin, still.
hope you get some snow down your way so those off- the radar spots open up.
...one day after this thing's in the rear view, hope to meet up for a night-ski somewhere. (like berk east or jiminy after a full day at magic ;0)

I agree that Jiminy has the best night skiing around. In addition to the factors already mentioned, the fact that they’re open for it all week (or at least used to be) is a major advantage too. Even the tiny bump of a hill I have down here doesn’t stay open on Sunday night and is now closed Monday & Tuesday too.

Figure about an hour down to Hancock from Londonderry. That would make for a fine day. All in.
Been too long since I’ve been to Jiminy. Nice hill.

Any weather nerds have good news about Fri-Sat night? Looks like 3-6 inches of wet slop from the forecasts.

27º bob with 1/8" of new snow gracing the yard. Calm and not clear w/cloud ceiling at 2500'.
NWS discussion seems positive for snow above 1000', lets hope this plays out. Six to twelve inches of wet snow on top of our five to eight inches of current snowpack would finally open a number of off piste locations.
Washing the car this afternoon.
It should be noted that the operational GDPS while only differing
slightly in the low track (westward) from the ECMWF/GFSv16, does
have quite a stronger warm nose aloft Saturday and would cut down on
higher elevation snow, and present mainly rain in the valleys.
Hedged this forecast closer to the ECMWF/GFSv16, which early guesses
at snow accumulations through Sunday would be minimal at elevations
below 1000ft with perhaps 1-3". Higher elevations have the best
chance at accumulating snow with 3-6" mid-slope and up to a foot
possible above 2500 feet. Trends are our friend currently with model
guidance, but we all know too well how little shifts can make a huge
difference with these kinds of storms. Stay tuned.
We made flames Saturday night to please ULLR

I grew up racing at Jiminy. I definitely appreciated the steeps and snow making coverage. But man do they cater to the lowest common denominator. They groom every single flake that falls on the mountain. You could have 16" of fresh white gold in the parking lot, and the mountain will be entirely draped in corduroy. And if you dare duck into the trees, patrol will follow you to pull your pass.
